Milestone for Sunshine Coast University Private – First Cardiac Surgery Case

January 08, 2018

Just four years after opening and after two years of planning, the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital has made history performing the Sunshine Coast’s first ever cardiac surgical case.

Prior to this, patients needing this life-changing surgery would have to travel to Brisbane. Several procedures have now been successfully completed by the team since the first case in November by the hospital’s team of four cardiac surgeons, Drs Douglas Wall, Robert Tam, Trevor Fayers and Homayoun Jalali.

Dr Wall told the Sunshine Coast Daily after the first surgery that it had been a “good start”. “Now patients can have the same surgery offered in Brisbane.

It is a huge positive for patients and their families and we are very proud to bring this advanced health service to the Coast.”

Hospital CEO, Oliver Steele, paid tribute to the dedication of the team and the Hospital’s hardworking staff in making this possible.

“This has truly been a team effort with nearly all departments across the hospital working together to ensure the successful start of our cardiac surgery program. We are delighted that this is another milestone in the range of private services the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital offers to private patients and a great outcome for the Sunshine Coast community,” Oli said.

The hospital’s Cardiac Surgical service took several months of intense work including gaining regulatory approval and is part of the hospital’s strategy to expand the range of services available to private patients on the Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay region.
