A/Prof Jay Iyer was born, schooled and trained as a doctor in India. He served for 16 years in the Indian Army Medical Corps as a Specialist before moving to Australia in 2010. Besides his basic medical and two specialist qualifications acquired overseas, A/Prof Iyer is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists UK, and Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. His expertise lies in the tertiary surgical management of complex gynaecological and urogynaecological issues like endometriosis, fibroids and pelvic floor disorders like prolapse and incontinence.
A/Prof Iyer is the Director of the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy and Surgery Society, and runs the 2-year Advanced Laparoscopic (key-hole surgery) Fellowship Training Program for Australian trainees.
Apart from his dedication to his patients A/Prof Iyer’s passion lies in teaching and training young doctors and specialists. He is also a certified Robotic Surgeon who performs complex gynaecological and urogynaecological procedures using the Da Vinci Surgical Robot.
A/Prof Iyer is currently involved in a number of research projects in his areas of expertise. He is the only Queensland representative of Surgical Advisory Committee in the speciality of Gynaecology, and ardently advocates for health issues affecting women in North Queensland, including access to treatment.
In his spare time he is a voracious reader, health advocate and a mad, mad 4 wheel-driving nut who loves to build and drive 4WD vehicles! He has a fascination and an abiding love for the Australian outback, and uses every opportunity to get into the bulldust. Jay’s wife, Sonia, is a dentist in private practice and they have two daughters.
A/Prof Iyer will provide regular Urogynaecology and General Gynaecology services at Ramsay Cairns, jointly with his colleague and mentor Prof Ajay Rane.
