Professor Emad El-Omar is a specialist gastroenterologist. He is the Professor of Medicine at St George & Sutherland Clinical School, UNSW, and Consultant Gastroenterologist at St George Hospital, Kogarah. He graduated in Medicine from Glasgow University, Scotland, and trained as a gastroenterologist in the UK. He also trained at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre, TN, and The National Cancer Institute, MD, USA. He was Professor of Gastroenterology at Aberdeen University, Scotland, for 16 years before taking up the Chair of Medicine at St George & Sutherland Clinical School, UNSW, in March 2016. He is the Editor in Chief of the journal Gut, the second highest ranking journal in the world for this specialty. He has a wide range of research interests with an international expertise and reputation in Gastrointestinal cancer, Helicobacter pylori related diseases, dyspepsia and inflammatory bowel disease. He has world expertise in various aspects of the “microbiome” having worked in this field for the past 20 years. He is the Director of the Microbiome Research Centre at St George Hospital, which he set up in April 2017.

Professor El-Omar has a particular interest in the investigation and management of any aspect of luminal adult gastroenterology. He also has unique expertise in the gut microbiome, dyspepsia and Helicobacter related diseases.
