Dr Ben East is an Orthopaedic Surgeon who has returned to Newcastle following completion of his fellowship in Cambridge. Ben has a particular interest in upper limb conditions and treatment.
Dr East originally trained as a Biomechanical engineer. His interest in medicine and orthopaedics developed while working with leprosy patients in Southern India. Following this he studied medicine at the University of Sydney and then moved to Newcastle as a junior doctor enrolled in Orthopaedic Surgery training. After completing a local fellowship with Dr Don Osborne he then travelled to Melbourne to complete a fellowship in Shoulder and Elbow surgery. Before settling back to Newcastle he completed 2 further fellowships in arthroscopy, upper limb trauma and degenerative shoulder conditions in the UK and France.
Dr East remains interested in the implementation of cutting edge engineering technology, research and the application of advances in medicine and surgery to patient care. He commonly carries out shoulder replacement using advanced prostheses, keyhole shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff repair and unstable shoulders and Latarjet procedures.
Dr East also performs elbow arthroscopy, stiff elbow release and mobilisation, reconstruction for instability, nerve decompression and transposition surgery. He also treats shoulder and elbow fractures and dislocations, AC joint and clavicle fractures & dislocations as well as all types of general orthopaedic trauma.
