Dr Lisa Blackwell qualified as a doctor from Imperial College of Medicine & Technology, London, UK in 1995. During her time at medical school she was also awarded a scholarship to study nutrition at King's College, London, for a year and received an Intercalated Bachelor of Science in Nutrition in 1992. Dr Blackwell worked in Emergency Medicine, Oncology, Palliative Care and General Practice before committing fully to specialising in psychiatry in 2000.
Dr Blackwell did her specialist training in psychiatry both as a junior and advanced trainee in the UK as part of London hospital training schemes. She became a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in the UK in 2005.
Dr Blackwell moved to Australia in 2007 and became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2010.
Whilst maintaining a strong evidence based approach to pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, Dr Blackwell has a long-standing interest in a holistic and integrative approach to health.
As well as studying nutrition, she trained in hypnotherapy originally in 1996 and started a hypnotherapy clinic within the UK National Health Service prior to moving to Australia and still uses hypnotherapy selectively with suitable patients.
In addition to a strong basic foundation in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, group therapy and training in psychodynamic therapy, Dr Blackwell worked a day a week between 2008 and 2012 at the Centre for Psychotherapy, Newcastle, NSW, co-facilitating a
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy Group and seeing patients for individual therapy. Dr Blackwell is also trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprogramming (EMDR) and uses this with selected patients suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Dr Blackwell focuses her practice on treating adults with Anxiety Disorders, Mood disorders and, in particular, patients with both Complex and Acute PTSD.
As part of this she sees a number of patients for long term weekly psychotherapy, using an eclectic approach incorporating her broader psychotherapy background.
Dr Blackwell works 3 days a week in the Specialist Consulting Rooms seeing outpatients and has taken on a limited number of inpatients with the opening of the expanded Lakeside Clinic in March 2018.
