The launch was attended by staff, Consultants, local dignitaries and charity representatives. The new Springfield Oncology Centre builds on the existing cancer service that has been provided by Springfield Hospital for over 25 years. Through a partnership with the largest independent provider of Radiotherapy in the UK and Australia, GenesisCare, and with the support of leading cancer specialists, the new centre will serve communities across Essex and Hertfordshire. The centre brings together expertise and the very latest equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This newest centre adds to the nine that GenesisCare run in the UK after acquiring the UK’s leading provider of private cancer services, Cancer Partners UK in 2015. Local consultant oncologists have been involved in the development of the Oncology Centre, and the opening of the centre at the hospital is a dream come true for Professor Neville Davidson, consultant oncologist at Springfield Hospital. Professor Davidson treated BBC sport presenter Helen Rollason, who successfully founded The Helen Rollason Cancer Charity with him in 1999. Both Michael and Ali donated their fees for attending the event to the charity, who will be working closely with patients at the centre to provide those attending with holistic therapies and support. The CDC is set up to provide accurate assessment, treatment and intervention for children with developmental disorders from birth. Located at the PMC, the Centre will operate with a specialized team which includes Developmental Paediatrician, Audiologists, Clinical Psychologists, Dietician, Occupational Therapist, Optometrist, Physiotherapist and Speech Language Pathologist. For all children, early childhood provides an important window of opportunity to prepare the foundation for life-long learning and participation, while preventing potential delays in development and disabilities. Speaking at the launch, PMC Chief Executive Officer Ms. Ch’ng Lin Ling said: “We believe there is a lack of holistic services to accurately assess and intervene children with special needs. For children who experience any kind of disability or developmental delay, early childhood is a vital time to ensure access to interventions which can help them reach their full potential. The CDC is designed to facilitate an environment where children with developmental disorders of any kind are given the accurate diagnosis, the appropriate treatment and the on-going support required for them and their families which is often overlooked by mainstream programmes. “We will also be working with Government agencies to advocating for the children and their parents/caregivers to ensure their rights are met and inclusivity and/or special privileges are provided by the Government especially in the educational and social environment systems.” PMC is working with Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat (JKM) to provide input on improvement of services for children with special needs in the country. As a start, PMC will give a 10 per cent discount on hospital charges for all patients carrying the OKU (Orang Kurang Upaya) card. The CDC’s objectives also include: • Using interdisciplinary team approach in the assessment to ensure accurate diagnosis, to be followed by integrated intervention program to ensure children with special needs are able to fully function in the society • Providing psycho-emotional and psycho-educational support to parents/caregivers/family members especially those whose child is newly diagnosed with developmental delay • Contributing to increasing public awareness through events that will promote inclusivity of children with special needs in daily life activities Present at the launch was Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care Chairman Dato’ Dr Jacob Thomas and representatives from JPK and JKM.
