The Ramsay Way 2016 | 03 9 HOSPITAL NEWS Greenslopes Prostate Cancer Nurse on Global Stage Methods used to care for prostate cancer patients at Greenslopes Private Hospital have been shared with urology experts from around the world. Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse, Christopher McNamara, was invited to present at the annual Urological Association of Asia Congress, which was held in Singapore from 20 – 24 July 2016. Mr McNamara took part in this year’s nursing symposium with more than 450 delegates. His presentation discussed the entire pathway of care for patients at Greenslopes Private Hospital, from their diagnosis through to survivorship or end of life care. “My role is very unique in the cancer journey with complete continuity of care along the treatment continuum. I discussed the impact of my role on the patients since its inception two years ago,” Mr McNamara said. He also met the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS) and its prostate cancer support group, The Walnut Warriors, who meet once a week. “Meeting the Walnut Warriors gave me a sense of pride in seeing what men can achieve when they stick together and help each other out,” Mr McNamara said. “Feedback from this session highlighted the great divide in treatment and information that patients receive in Asia compared to the ease of access and importance of Australia’s Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse role in supporting men through their prostate cancer journey.” Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men. The disease kills more men than breast cancer does women. Greenslopes Private Hospital is home to one of only six Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses in Queensland. This position is part of The Prostate Cancer Specialist Nursing Program, which was established to meet the needs of men living with prostate cancer. It is also the first role of its kind in Australia, coordinated through the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). What made this event very special is that Sue has been present at the birth of all six of Angeline and Chris Edmonds’ children. Sue’s presence at the first three births was a coincidence. However, after forming a special bond with the Edmonds family, Sue scheduled her shifts to coincide with the delivery of the last three children. Commenting on the birth, Sue said “I feel delighted to have helped deliver all six of Angeline’s children. It’s been wonderful to develop such a strong relationship with the family over the years and to watch the children grow.” “It is a privilege to care for mothers at such a special time in their life, and to provide them with a positive and individual birthing experience.” “I have been at Glengarry Private Hospital for 31 years. Three of my children and four of my grandchildren have been born here.
