Darius shared his story at Caloundra Private Clinic in the lead-up to mental health week. Recognising this vitally important work within our community, Caloundra Private Clinic invited Darius Boyd, Brisbane Bronco's fullback and Ramsay Mental Health Ambassador to share his experience with depression and how we as individuals can care for ourselves and others. Darius understands what it’s like to experience a dark head space. He spent a long time not knowing why he felt angry and sad before seeking help for depression a couple of years ago at a Ramsay Health Care Clinic. His message to patients and staff was clear and optimistic. You don't have to go it alone. There is something you can do if you're experiencing depression and the rewards of feeling well are enormous. Darius re-signed as a Ramsay Mental Health ambassador earlier this year and has also been appointed a league mental health ambassador by the NRL. “If I can help out in anyway or give back by sharing my story, I’d like to do so,” Darius said. It was not until he sought help that he realised his mother had also battled depression since he was about 15. "At the time I really didn't know what was wrong with her." As Darius got older he realised his depression was impacting on his personal life. “I pushed people away. I kept to myself." he said. "The hardest part was not checking into a clinic or speaking about depression, but trying to fight against it alone," he said. “Dealing with it, once I opened up and spoke about it - that was the easy part I guess." Standing tall and standing strong before us was a contented man who talked fondly of his great marriage, beautiful baby girl, his mates and mentors on and off the field, a man ready to don the prestigious Australian jersey and take his well-earned place in the Australian Kangaroos Four Nations squad. New cardiac technology at John Flynn Private Hospital Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, Dr John Meulet, is one of the first Gold Coast Cardiologists to utilise new technology for implantable devices. The availability of the technology, known as the TYRX Absorbable Antibacterial Envelope, is used when a patient receives a cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) such as a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to help prevent surgical-site infections. Recently, Mr and Mrs Hope of Ballina, both 87, together underwent successful pacemaker and ICD replacement procedures at John Flynn Private with Dr Meulet, who utilised the new TYRX antibiotic sleeve technology. The TYRX Antibacterial Envelope is a mesh envelope that holds an electronic implantable device and is designed to stabilise the device after implantation while releasing two antimicrobial agents, over a minimum of seven days to help reduce surgical-site infections. The “Envelope” is fully absorbed by the body approximately nine weeks after implantation. CIED infections can be debilitating or deadly to the patients they affect. While the risk of infection is low for most patients receiving an implantable device, the TYRX envelope offers an extra layer of protection and provides physicians with a solution which makes implantable device procedures safer for their patients. Westmead Private Hospital ready to help Westmead Children’s Hospital Westmead Private Hospital has recently signed a three year contract with the Children’s Hospital Westmead, to provide surgical services to publicly funded paediatric patients. Surgeries will include thoracic, spinal, plastic and ENT, with the first cohort of procedures successfully completed. The collaboration with CHW has additional benefits such as educational opportunities across both sites and have appositive impact on the waiting times for CHW. Whilst many adult public hospitals have established a way of working collaboratively with the private hospital sector, the complexity and specific needs of paediatric medicine has meant that the majority of work has stayed within the boundaries of the public paediatric facilities. Westmead CEO Mike Flatley said it was credit to the doctors and staff at Westmead Private that the Children’s Hospital recognised they could meet the specific needs of paediatric patients.
