The loss of a friend and colleague at the hospital eighteen months ago inspired registered nurses Christa Theron, Paula Shirley and Katreena Cook to create the garden within their palliative care unit that looks after people in the last days of their life. Christa Theron said the former concrete courtyard had been transformed into a beautiful space styled on a cottage garden with edible plants, ornamental features and paintings. “It was an empty block with brown brick walls and we’d always wanted to do something there,” Ms Theron said. Christa said a number of families, staff and patients donated funds to get the garden off the ground. “We used the funds to buy the furniture and the plants and it has really come together beautifully,” she said. “It’s a sad ward at times, but we’ve got a wonderful staff and this will be a great place for people to reflect on the journey of life.” Chief executive Sandra Moore said the former cold concrete space was now awash with light. “We wanted to make over the courtyard to create a calm, pretty space. The nurses embraced it as a personal project and volunteered their time to bring it to fruition,” Sandra said. It took six months to complete the project. “Our aim was to nurture a space where people could sit and reflect on lives well lived, enjoyment shared and memories that will transcend time for patients, families and staff.”
