ACHIEVEMENTS
2018 HESTA NURSING & MIDWIFERY AWARDS
Four Ramsay employees have been recognised among Australia’s best nurses and midwives at the 2018 HESTA Nursing & Midwifery Awards
Deanna Ward, Cairns Private Hospital
Finalist: Nurse or Midwife of the Year
Believing there was a better way to
support expectant mothers, Deanna
developed the national ‘Know My
Midwife’ program, which offers
mums-to-be holistic care with their
midwife and obstetrician throughout
pregnancy.
The Know My Midwife program is
offered by private health care centres,
and focuses on the promotion of
continuity-of-care for new mums.
Through regular appointments with
their midwife and obstetrician during
their pregnancy and postnatally
the program helps women form
meaningful and trusted relationships.
Deanna is described by her peers as a
‘midwifery innovator’ and is nationally
recognised as a speaker, researcher
and endorsed midwifery clinician. The
Know My Midwife program is the first
of its kind in the private health care
sector, providing a blueprint for other
service providers to implement similar
programs.

Glynnis Carvalho,
John Flynn Private Hospital
Finalist: Outstanding Graduate
During her graduate year rotation on the
oncology ward, Glynnis demonstrated
outstanding leadership and advanced
nursing skills in her delivery of care to
cancer patients. Despite being in her first
year of nursing and the first registered
nurse graduate to rotate through the
Oncology Day Unit, Glynnis quickly
proved herself a leader.
Always upholding the highest standards
of professionalism, she demonstrated her
ability to deliver complex chemotherapy
protocols, and comprehensive patient
education and assessments. Glynnis also
displayed an innate ability to establish
and maintain relationships with her
patients, connecting with them through
compassion and competent care, so
much so that patients often provided
feedback of Glynnis’ outstanding work.
Glynnis proactively took on
responsibilities above her seniority,
including filling in as team leader.
She made clinical decisions astutely,
escalated concerns to her superiors
and facilitated team meetings ensuring
effective communication on patient care.
With a clear passion and enthusiasm for
her work, Glynnis consistently showed
initiative and motivation to be the best
she can be, not just meeting her work
requirements but going above and
beyond to deliver the highest standards
of care to her patients.
Rachelle Chikan,
Peninsula Private Hospital
Finalist: Outstanding Graduate
Proving herself as a role model
amongst her fellow graduates,
Rachelle demonstrated capabilities
beyond that of a graduate, maintaining
the highest levels of professionalism
and standards of care when treating
patients and working with team
members.
A self-starter, Rachelle demonstrated
advanced interpersonal skills when
communicating with patients, adapting
quickly to the patients changing needs
and establishing relationships built on
trust and integrity. Radiating a can-do
attitude, Rachelle regularly assessed
and critiqued her own performance,
and demonstrated high levels of
commitment to continuing professional
development.
It was this dedication that led Rachelle
to volunteer as a mentor to help fellow
nursing graduates transition to the
workforce. Always a team player,
Rachelle has cemented herself as a
leader amongst her peers, consistently
reaching her professional and personal
goals, while always offering support to
her fellow team members.
Samantha Johnson, Hollywood
Private Hospital
Finalist: Outstanding Graduate
In her graduate year, Samantha
demonstrated advanced leadership
skills, passion and initiative when
caring for patients with mental health
conditions. During her placement at
The Hollywood Clinic, Hollywood
Private Hospital’s 70 bed inpatient
and day patient mental health facility,
Samantha was exposed to difficult
and confronting situations. Despite
these challenges, her peers often
commended her on her ability to act
with the highest levels of confidence,
grace, and care.
Interested in helping patients
with eating disorders, Samantha
volunteered to co-host weekly support
meetings for the family and friends of
patients. As host Samantha ensured
attendees always received accurate
information and were taught the skills
they need to support their loved ones
after they left hospital.
Motivated to reduce the stigma
often associated with mental health
conditions, Samantha has begun
working in collaboration with
Hollywood Private Hospital’s eating
disorder program, striving to ensure
patients receive the very best care in a
safe and non-judgmental environment.
