WA election commitment comes to fruition for Joondalup WA Premier Mark McGowan and Ramsay Health Care (RHC) Australia Chief Executive Officer Danny Sims have committed to work together to further expand Joondalup Health Campus (JHC). On Saturday 24 June the two parties re-affirmed their commitment to the hospital expansion by co-signing a ‘Statement of Intent’ paving the way for a major expansion. The plans will see the WA Government honour its $167 million election commitment to provide: • 90 additional public beds; • up to 30 new mental health beds; • expansion of the Emergency Department; • eight new operating theatres; • a new six-bed stroke unit; • a Medihotel and an Urgent Care Clinic; and • expanded car park facilities. WA Premier Mark McGowan said the expansion would provide an enormous benefit not only for people in Perth’s rapidly growing northern suburbs but also for the WA Health system generally. “Activity at Joondalup Health Campus has increased significantly in many clinical areas in recent years and The Ramsay Way 2017 | 02 7 DEVELOPMENT NEWS Mental Health Observation Area a step closer Work to expand Joondalup Health Campus’ Emergency Department (ED) waiting room will get underway in the coming months as part of the next stage redevelopment of the hospital’s Mental Health Observation Area (MHOA). The expansion will enable the ED, which is one of the busiest in the country, to accommodate more people in the waiting room, and in turn, improve patient flow and comfort for patients and their families. Meanwhile, work on the MHOA continues with the project running ahead of schedule and due for completion at the end of the year. A joint initiative between the WA Government and Ramsay Health Care, the 10-bed MHOA will vastly improve care for patients presenting to the hospitals ED with mental illness. The Mental Health Observation Area at JHC is planned for completion in early 2018 but may be finished ahead of schedule. while the hospital continues to perform extremely well, this expansion will allow for an even better health service with extra capacity and improved services,” he said. “Last year, the JHC Emergency Department had close to 100,000 presentations, making it one of the busiest EDs in the nation, a position it has been in for some years now. It also performed around 30,750 procedures - a 58 per cent increase over a five year period. “This explains why we need more theatres, an expansion of the ED and additional capacity across the board.
