The joint event (Dudley Private, Strathfield Private and St George Private), attracted GPs from Bathurst, Lithgow, Dubbo and Forbes — for a day of interactive, hands-on learning about obesity-related health conditions. “More than 80 per cent of Australians will be overweight or obese by 2025 and obesity now outstrips smoking as our most common preventable disease risk factor” says Associate Professor Michael Talbot, bariatric surgeon at St George Private, Strathfield Private and Dudley Private. “A recent Medical Journal of Australia report revealed that GPs frequently do not talk to their patients about their weight and fewer than one in 20 Australian GP patients had their waist circumferences measured, despite national guidelines recommending doctors take body mass and waist circumference measurements. “There is little doubt that obesity is one of the most challenging and confronting issues GPs will face in their surgeries, and we hope this conference provided some prescriptive and useful strategies to help local doctors start the weight conversation with patients.” ■ A L B U R Y W O D O N G A Health Minister opens new cardiac facilities Albury Wodonga Private upgrades cardiac services. Albury Wodonga Private Hospital has recently completed an upgrade to the Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory and it was formally opened in June by The Hon. Sussan Ley, MP Minister for Health, along with Danny Sims, Chief Executive Officer for Ramsay Australia. Albury Wodonga Private Hospital has recently installed a state-of-the-art Philips Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory which is the only equipment of its kind in the Albury Wodonga region. The service has been upgraded to meet the needs of the community and to avoid the need for patients to travel long distances for many cardiac procedures. The new equipment was commissioned in January this year and has already enabled over 150 patients to be successfully treated for a range of procedures, including angiograms and the insertion of stents, as well as pacemaker insertion. Albury Wodonga Private Hospital provides interventional cardiac procedures to patients from a wide geographical area. The number of patients treated in the lab each week continues to grow and, as such, Ramsay Health Care recognised the need to upgrade the equipment to ensure the delivery of the highest quality and safe patient care. Albury Wodonga is extremely fortunate to have available the services of three excellent cardiologists, Dr Jan du Plooy, Dr Jith Somaratne and Dr Naylin Bissessor. These doctors are supported by our highly trained nurses and radiologists and also two Albury Wodonga resident consultant cardiologists, Dr Kugan Nadarasa and Dr Jennifer Law. Superior standard nursing care is available post operation. ■ K A R E E N A BABY YOU TAKE THE CAKE They say ecstasy is a full glass of tea, and something sweet in your mouth. And so it is at Kareena Private, with the families of every newborn now offered a high tea to celebrate the arrival of their newest member. Beautifully presented finger fancies — from smoked salmon ribbon sandwiches to freshly baked scones with whipped cream & strawberries and accompanying teas — are all part of the maternity experience at Kareena Private. Head Chef, Ajith Subramaniam, personally delivers the congratulatory high tea sweets and describes the feedback as overwhelming positive. “It’s about the attention to detail and personal touches that enhances our maternity patients' experience at Kareena and the new mums just love the high tea!”.
