Good samaritan, Hollywood nurse Martin Coulter The innovative procedure using the da Vinci® Surgical System and single site instrumentation involves removing a woman’s reproductive organs through one single two centimetre incision through the belly button, with virtually scarless results. Single site robotic surgery is the latest advance in robotic surgery that is changing the way surgeons perform complex surgical procedures world-wide. During a robotic-assisted single-site procedure, the surgeon sits at the robotic console, viewing a 3-D, highdefinition camera image of the surgical site. The surgeon uses hand controls to move the camera and instruments — controls that translate hand, wrist and finger movements into more precise movements of the smaller instruments inside the patient. Associate Professor Land said that the first two procedures went extremely well because of the great team at Greenslopes indeed the support from mentor Dr Felix Chan from Westmead Private in Sydney. “Conventional laparoscopy and robotic surgery both offer the promise of less invasive surgery to treat both benign and cancerous gynaecologic conditions however this new technique really takes minimally invasive surgery to the next level – one incision all hidden in the umbilicus,” Associate Professor Land said. Single-site surgery goes farther than conventional techniques by allowing surgeons to perform complex abdominal procedures through a single, tiny incision in the belly button. Benefits of this approach include the cosmetically hidden surgical scar at the base of the navel. Additionally, the navel is the thinnest part of the abdominal wall, with few nerves, blood vessels and little muscle, so patients may avoid incisions through their abdominal muscles and may experience less pain after the surgery. ■ P E E L H E A LT H C A M P U S PEEL MEASURES UP TO NATIONAL STANDARDS Following their recent accreditation in June, Peel Health Campus has received the final report from the Australian Council of Healthcare Standards (ACHS) outlining how they measured up to the ten National Standards for Safety and Quality in Health Care. The results were an overwhelming success and the team at Peel are delighted. Peel Health Campus satisfactorily met all of the requirements for the 256 criteria outlined in the national standards, meeting eight of the criteria with merit — the highest rating possible. The accreditation surveyors from ACHS commented that there was a consistent culture of safety and quality which was continually evaluated across all services in the hospital. They further commented that the impact and strength of the Ramsay Health Care corporate values amongst staff created a positive and constructive environment. The final report highlighted that: “The staff were passionate and committed to providing safe, quality care and this was a consistent theme and attitude across the organisation and was demonstrated in their day-to-day operations.” Hospital CEO, Dr Margaret Sturdy said she was thrilled with the results. “I’m overjoyed with these results and extremely grateful to the amazing team here at Peel Health Campus who have made this possible. It is a tremendous achievement to satisfactorily meet all of the developmental criteria, and it is phenomenal to receive “met with merit”. This result speaks volumes about Peel’s wonderful staff, who live and breathe the delivery of high quality patient care and service to our community.” TAMARA TAMARA PRIVATE LAUNCHES NEW HALF DAY REHABILITATION PROGRAM Tamara Private Hospital launched its half day rehabilitation program in August in response to growing demand for locally-based rehabilitation services. The new half-day program will compliment the hospital's existing inpatient rehabilitation services. Tamara’s comprehensive rehabilitation services are designed to assist patients to regain the greatest level of independence possible after illness, injury or surgery. Programs have been designed to cater for patients requiring orthopaedic, neurological, musculoskeletal, reconditioning and amputee rehabilitation. Patients and carers play an integral role within the team and are encouraged to participate in planning and goal setting within their program. Patients will partake in rehabilitation programs within Tamara’s large gymnasium, consulting rooms, treatment areas and rehabilitation garden. Locally based rehabilitation services at Tamara Private Hospital will alleviate the need for patients to travel out of town for similar services. “As we got closer we saw that one member of the group appeared to fall from their bike. We didn’t think too much of it and assumed that he had caught his foot in the pedal and toppled over.” Just as Martin and his family were about to turn into their driveway they could see that he still hadn’t moved. “My wife Andrea and I approached Mr Barnett and quickly established that he was unresponsive, not breathing and had no pulse. At this point, I quickly turned him onto his back and commenced CPR.” Whilst administering CPR, another bystander arrived at the scene with a portable defibrillator. “Due to how unlikely this occurrence seemed we assumed he must have been a paramedic, nurse or other experienced medical practitioner. A plumber wasn’t quite what we expected.” Using CPR and the defibrillator, the group managed to revive Mr Barnett. “Both my wife and I are very happy that Mr Barnett has since made a full recovery” said Martin. ■
