Ellinor Pick and Alice Mueller are second year nursing students at the Academy for Health Professionals, Heidelberg and the University of Heidelberg, Germany’s oldest tertiary institution and one of the most famous academic centres in Europe. As part of their course, they are employed as student nurses at the University Hospital, Heidelberg, one of the largest and most prestigious medical centres in the country. Nursing students in Heidelberg are able to undertake a five-week overseas internship in order to experience healthcare in another cultural setting and to develop their understanding of the nursing profession in a global context. Previous programs have been run with partnering hospitals throughout Europe and in many other parts of the world. North Shore Private Hospital was the first Australian hospital to participate in this program and both Ellinor and Alice made their first trip to the Southern Hemisphere in order to undertake the internship. The students were able to experience many aspects of Australian nursing during their placement through visits to all the clinical areas of the hospital, interviews with senior nursing staff members, participation in hospital education sessions and visits to community nursing providers and the local Aboriginal Health Unit. They were also able to learn more about Australian life through visits to museums and cultural landmarks in Sydney. “It was such a pleasure to welcome overseas nursing students to North Shore Private Hospital” said program co-ordinator and Cardiac Nurse Educator, Elizabeth Matters. “The students were full of enthusiasm to learn and took every opportunity to make the most of their visit to Sydney. “From our perspective, it was wonderful to hear about how nursing is done in Germany and to discuss the cultural and organisational differences between our two health systems. “As part of a multinational company which employs health professionals all over the world, it is very important that we have a sense of our work on an international scale and develop close networks with our overseas nursing colleagues. Our participation in this program with such a well-renowned university and health institution promoted the value of international collaboration and has set a precedent for future educational opportunities in partnership with nurses from around the world.” Lowest Lost Time Injury Rate ever Ramsay Health Care Australian hospitals achieved their lowest lost time injury rate ever in June 2014 and have gone on to better this position in July and August. The LTIFR is the Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate of the company based on a rolling 12 months of data. National Safety Manager Chanelle McEnallay said it was an incredible achievement that activity across the company was increasing but injuries were falling. “The LTIFR It is one of the work health and safety KPIs and is an indicator of how serious an injury is. If injured workers do not need to lose full shifts or more, it generally indicates an injury is less serious than one requiring time off or away from work,” Chanelle said. “In June 2014 we set a record breaking LTIFR of 4.00 the lowest ever in the company, we then improved on that performance throughout July and for the first time achieved an LTIFR below 4 for the rolling 12 month period – 3.96.” She singled out Joondalup Health Campus in Western Australia which has recorded five consecutive months of zero lost time injuries and the Safety competition winners announced Ramsay Health Care has recently announce the winners of the Safety Competition which ran in October 2013. Kareena and Greenslopes Private Hospital were the equal winners of first prize being $3500. Runners up were The Avenue, Warners Bay and Dudley Private Hospitals. All the winners had initiatives with group wide application, ease of use and innovation relevant to our current equipment or programs. National Anti-Bullying Campaign Winner In April 2014 the National Safety Team launched the Ramsay Anti-Bullying Campaign which ran over five days and contained a poster competition to bring to life the issue of bullying awareness and how to stop it through a visual medium. Some wonderful entries were received with this original artwork by Ann Sheridan taking out the top prize. All facilities are able to use this entry as a poster for bullying awareness in their facility, just contact the National Safety Team for details. Well done Ann and all our entrants.
