Robot gives women chance to conceive again DR FELIX CHAN, GYNAECOLOGY ONCOLOGIST AT WESTMEAD PRIVATE HOSPITAL UNDERTOOK THE FIRST ROBOTIC, SINGLE SITE, FALLOPIAN TUBE REVERSAL IN AUSTRALIA IN AUGUST. IT IS EXPECTED THAT THIS NEW APPROACH TO SURGERY WILL MEAN A DAY ONLY STAY FOR THIS PROCEDURE AS WELL AS QUICKER RECOVER, SMALLER INCISION & LESS PAIN. “The robotic system offers a greater range of motion and more surgical dexterity than I can obtain during the traditional laparoscopic tubal ligation reversal. Women will now be able to undergo this procedure as a day only patient and be back at home within the day and be back to a normal life pattern within a week.” Robotic surgical technology gives doctors like Dr Chan new and improved ways to explore and advance their already well proven surgical techniques. Tubal reversal is a surgical procedure that attempts to restore fertility to women after a tubal ligation. By rejoining the separated segments of the fallopian tube, tubal reversal may give women the chance to become pregnant again. This procedure has been traditionally performed via a laparotomy, which involves a large incision, a 5-7 day stay in hospital and a longer recovery period (4-6 weeks before RAMSAYINDONESIA 12 The Ramsay Way - 2014 | 03 Healthy Ramadhan Programs for the Community DURING THE FASTING MONTH FOR MOSLEMS, RAMSAY INDONESIA’S PREMIER BINTARO HOSPITAL LAUNCHED A SPECIAL HEALTHY RAMADHAN PROGRAM. HOLLYWOOD PRIVATE HOSPITAL HAS INTRODUCED A NEW ENDOSCOPIC ULTRASOUND SERVICE TO COMPLEMENT THE ESTABLISHED CANCER & GASTROENTEROLOGY SERVICES AT THE HOSPITAL ENABLING PATIENTS TO BE ABLE TO UNDERGO THE ENTIRE WORKUP & TREATMENT PROCESS FOR UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL PATHOLOGY AT THE CENTRE. According to leading gastroenterologist Associate Professor Ian Yusoff, the new technology means improved outcomes for cancer patients. “This is the first private endoscopic ultrasound service north of the river and offers patients rapid access to state of the art imaging technology,” he said. “It is very exciting and is a significant step forward for Hollywood. “The technology is critical in directing treatment in a number of cancers including cancer of the pancreas, bile ducts, stomach and oesophagus. It also has a role in other common cancers such as lung cancer. “Because we use high frequency ultrasound and can get very close to the target organ, we are able to detect and biopsy very small lesions, down to 2-3 millimetres, meaning early detection and appropriate treatment. “Its role is not limited to cancer and it is used widely in stone and cystic disease of the pancreas and bile ducts. Dr Yusoff said the service would hopefully improve access to this technology. “It means we will be able to accurately diagnose and treat these conditions in a timely manner. “ Hollywood’s Director of Medical Services, Dr Daniel Heredia said the new endoscopic ultrasound equipment complemented the hospital’s existing services. The addition of this new service is part of a recently completed master plan and will guide the development of clinical and support services on the Hollywood site over the next decade and beyond.
