The private hospital to be known as Wollongong Private Hospital will include all major services including a critical care unit, nine operating theatres, a cardiac catheter laboratory and a day oncology unit. It will offer the full range of medical, surgical and maternity services. Ramsay Health Care Chief Executive Officer Chris Rex said the development would be a significant boost to the private health care services in Wollongong and would bring jobs to the community. “This new private hospital for Wollongong is ideally located close to the public hospital and will bring much needed new private health care services to the Illawarra region. Importantly, it will provide enhanced and expanded hospital services for the region and this will further negate the need for patients to travel into Sydney for their medical care,” Mr Rex said. Ramsay currently operates the 101-bed Figtree Private Hospital but with the lease expiring in 2015, the Company has been investigating options for the future delivery of private hospital services in the region. “Figtree Private Hospital has provided an excellent service to the community over many years but the expansion of Figtree, with its ageing infrastructure and in its current location approximately 5kms from Wollongong’s medical hub, was not ideal. “This new private hospital in the centre of Wollongong will effectively replace the medical, surgical and maternity services at Figtree Private Hospital and allow us to increase the size by another 47 beds. “We are looking forward to providing a new hospital to the specialist doctors and staff who have been working with us at Figtree.” Figtree Private Hospital will continue to provide its current services until the opening of the new private hospital in Wollongong which is expected to be in October 2015 and then convert to a rehabilitation facility. THE $7 MILLION EXPANSION OF MILDURA BASE HOSPITAL HAS COMMENCED CONSTRUCTION & IS EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED WITHIN A YEAR. It will be the biggest upgrade of the hospital’s infrastructure since it opened in 2000, with its emergency department, maternity ward and mental health services to be expanded. The upgrade will provide the emergency department with extra emergency department cubicles, a short stay unit, additional consulting and treatment areas; provide another birthing suite, antenatal clinic space and improved amenity in the maternity ward; and expand the mental health treatment and consultation area. Mildura Base Hospital CEO Dane Huxley was excited about the commencement of the expansion works, which he said had been “a long time coming” and the culmination of about four years of planning. “We’ve been pushing for this for a long time and I think it’s going to give us a lot of very important things, particularly the short-stay unit in emergency,” he said. “We have really needed that for a number of years now. “The emergency department will get some much-needed expansion and those shortstay beds are becoming more important by the day.” The expansion follows the completion of a $480,000 upgrade to the hospital’s oncology department last month, which tripled the department’s size and doubled the number of chemotherapy chairs at the hospital to eight. RAMSAY HEALTH CARE OPENED A BRAND NEW MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY, NORTHSIDE MACARTHUR CLINIC IN CAMPBELLTOWN, IN OCTOBER. The 36-bed hospital will provide comprehensive mental health services to the community of Macarthur, treating patients with general and acute mental health disorders. The Northside Group CEO, Anne Mortimer said: “This is a very exciting development for Campbelltown and the whole Macarthur region.” “Private mental health services are poorly lacking in this area and sufferers of mental health disorders will benefit greatly from this new facility.” Artists impression of the new hospital.
