The Ramsay Way - Summer 2014

RAMSAYSANTÉ Therapy by Virtual Reality at Clinique de l’Escrebieux Ramsay Santé’s psychiatric clinic, Clinique de l’Escrebieux, has adopted new equipment for a new type of therapy: Therapy by Virtual Reality or “TVR”. Hailing from the US, Therapy by Virtual Reality - TVR - is an innovative technique which aims to immerse the patient in an “augmented” reality. The objective is to place the patient in a situation that can be best managed by his therapist. In practice, the patient will wear a head-mounted display, allowing for complete immersion in a virtual world. The environment is controlled during a TVR session as the practitioner masters all parameters. The treatment can be used for treatment of pathologies such as phobias: whether social phobias or more specific phobias, such as those of animals, such as spiders; or in the elderly, the fear of falling. TVR confronts the patient with their phobia without the brutality of that confrontation. The Ramsay Way - 2014 | 04 13 $4m NHMRC grant awarded to St George Private Intensivist St George Private Intensivist Professor John Myburgh was recently awarded a $4m National Health and Medical Research Grant, which could potentially benefit millions of ICU patients around the world. The grant, awarded by Health Minister Peter Dutton in October, was the only one triaged as a category 7 (top category) by the NHMRC, and was among 3000 total grant applications submitted for NHMRC grants in 2014 - 550 of which were ultimately funded. The grant will be used to fund a multi-centre trial of 23,000 patients and will centre on the efficacy of Selective Decontamination of the Digestive Tract (SDD). SDD involves critically ill patients being treated with antibiotics to the throat and stomach, in a bid to reduce infection and improve survival outcomes. Although preliminary research into SDD has shown promising results, they have not yet been convincing First State Super Caring for the people who care enough to vindicate SDD use in the mainstream, in the face of global antibiotic resistance. The new trial will involve patients across the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia and is expected to commence in 2016. “This is a very important study that will finally answer a longstanding controversy, and potentially will help prevent a major problem in critical illness,” says Associate Professor George Skowronski, Director of Intensive Care at St George Private Hospital. “Having John Myburgh involved in research likes this ensures our hospital remains on the cutting edge of intensive care medicine.” At First State Super we believe Australians who choose careers looking after others deserve to be confi dent that their super is in safe hands.
