The availability of the green light laser means people from the region no longer must travel to Melbourne, Ballarat or Geelong for the service. The green light laser is used to vaporise the enlarged prostate tissue, removing the urethra blockage and relieving the symptoms of BPH that can have serious complications if left untreated. The hospital’s clinical services director Margot McGrath said the new technology would be of huge benefit to the whole community. BPH is the most common non-cancerous prostate disease in Australia and by age 60 about 50 per cent of men will have symptoms such as frequent urination, especially at night, weak urine flow and incomplete bladder emptying. Urologist Dan Lenaghan said if BPH was left untreated it could lead to complications such as bladder stones or the inability to urinate. "If medication doesn’t work, the minimally invasive green light laser treatment provides advantages over the traditional transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), which uses a super-heated metal band to cut the prostate tissue," urologist Peter Mortensen said. "Patients generally only have to stay overnight after the procedure’s completion and lose significantly less blood than the traditional surgery. They are also less restricted in their movements in the weeks after the surgery." Dr Lenaghan said it was important for regional areas like Shepparton to have this technology because it provided a safer option for some patients because they did not have to stop taking medication for the green light laser – which they must do for TURP surgery. "People on blood thinning medication won’t have to run the risk of blood clots forming," he said. Shepparton Private Hospital has four urologists able to perform the GreenLight Laser Therapy treatment.  Laser is all go at Shepparton Urologists at Shepparton Private are undertaking GreenLight Laser Therapy for benign prostate hyperplasia thanks to a new laser console installed this year at the hospital.
