Executive Treasurer of Obesity Surgery Society ANZ Dr Ken Loi, says the hospital accreditation process, spearheaded by GIT Nursing Unit Manager Gayle Finn involved “jumping through many hoops,” and that the accolade was a major coup for the hospital. “St George Private was one of the first hospitals to carry out gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypasses in Australia – and this award is formal international recognition of safe and exceptional healthcare for patients.” Dr Loi says with an exponential increase from 300 to 13,000 obesity procedures in the past decade, and the public system now unable to cope with patient demand – more and more patients were looking to the private system for their surgery. “Obesity surgery continues to be one of the fastest growing areas of medicine in Australia and obese patients have two or three times greater chance of dying at a young age (under 60). “Without intervention, many will go on to develop heart and kidney failure from diabetes complications. And about 50 per cent of morbidly obese patients will have to live with crippling arthritis while sleep apnoea and stroke are also common complications.” Dr Loi says that patients who are otherwise unable to afford surgery, are now offered a new option by tapping into their super to pay for their surgery. GIT Gayle Finn Nurse Unit Manager who helped drive the accreditation process for the hospital.
