Nambour Selangor photo competition creates a buzz STRATHFIELD PRIVATE HOSPITAL WILL CONTINUE TO BRING PATIENTS FROM NEW CALEDONIA TO AUSTRALIA FOR LIFE-SAVING HEART SURGERY IN 2014 – FOR PROCEDURES INCLUDING CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS, GRAFT SURGERY, HEART VALVE REPLACEMENT, AORTIC SURGERY & REMOVAL OF ATRIAL MYXOMA. As these heart services cannot be undertaken in their own country, patients would otherwise have to travel to France to undergo the procedure – so a trip to Australia provides care closer to home. In the last three months, Strathfield admitted 27 patients into its CAFAT program, under the leadership of Cassy Board, Strathfield Private’s Cardiac Coordinator. “The hospital has two dedicated interpreters; communication cards are in French and patients are also given a phone card to contact their families. “During their three week stay in Australia, patients are regularly assessed by a cardiologist post-surgery and given extensive education in how to modify their cardiac risk factors such as smoking, diet and a sedentary lifestyle,” says Cassy. “Caring for patients from New Caledonia is particularly rewarding. Many of these patients are from remote islands and I can only imagine how they must feel - coming to a foreign country usually without any family to support them and undergoing such major surgery. “But despite all this they have a very positive approach to their operation and I enjoy seeing the friendships they develop with other patients and the staff.” In an effort to get staff engagement in aesthetically improving the hospital, Nambour Selangor Private management came up with an innovative idea that involved a photographic competition. The competition involved staff submitting photos of iconic Sunshine Coast landmarks and images and the photos chosen would be displayed in patient rooms to replace outdated prints. Over 100 images were submitted and 10 finalists were selected. These 10 photos were enlarged, framed and displayed in the hospital for staff to vote on. The final winner of the competition was Endorsed Enrolled Nurse Annelies Craig and runner up Hospital Coordinator Julie MacNaughtan. Forty of the original 100 photos were chosen to enlarge, frame and display in the patient rooms. CEO Shane Mitchell said the competition created a buzz in the hospital. “This proved to be very successful with overwhelmingly positive feedback from patients. It also proved to be a valuable talking point between patients and staff,” Shane said.
