Every year, over 2500 Australians die by suicide and a further 65000 make an attempt. The Paul Ramsay Foundation have stepped in to financially support the initial implementation of a new, evidence-based approach to suicide prevention in Australia. According to Professor Helen Christensen, Director of the Black Dog Institute and the NHMRC Centre for Excellence in Suicide Prevention, we have the knowledge to save thousands of lives and lead the world in suicide prevention activities. The opening of the 151-bed hospital means patients within the region have greater choice and options in health care, access to a broader range of services and reduces the need to travel to Sydney for major procedures. Wollongong Private Hospital CEO David Crowe said the opening, just over two years after construction began, is a coup for the region, building on the services already available in order to cater for a growing population. “The demand for quality health services within the region is constantly growing and patients should have the option of easy access to a full-range of quality services that meets their needs,” he said. “We found the demand for our services had outgrown our Figtree site and we needed to expand in order to continue providing quality care for our patients.
