Dr Simon Abson is a locally trained orthopaedic surgeon who commenced a public appointment at the John Hunter and Royal Newcastle Centre in April 2017. He is also based privately at Lake Macquarie Specialist Medical Centre offering his services at Lake Macquarie Private Hospital and at a number of other private hospitals in the Newcastle area.
Dr Abson obtained his medical degree from University of Sydney in 2004. He has trained and worked locally within Hunter New England Health for 12 years. During this time he became a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in Orthopaedics and trauma in 2016.
He has a particular interest in Spinal surgery and Trauma. He has spent twelve months completing his fellowship in adult and paediatric spine at Oxford University Trust Hospitals in the United Kingdom.
Dr Abson is an orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in spinal surgery and offering treatment for paediatric spinal deformity and trauma as well as adult spinal deformity, trauma, degenerative and tumour processes. In his time in Oxford he developed his surgical skills to include early onset and adolescent scoliosis management in a busy paediatric centre. He is also able to offer minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for select adult lumbar pathology.
Dr Abson is committed to teaching through his previous affiliation with the Hunter Postgraduate Medical Institute (HPMI) and public hospital posts and hopes to continue this into the future for the Hunter Area.
