A/Prof Michelle Gajus is an ophthalmologist who works exclusively in the Illawarra. She studied medicine at UNSW, graduating with first class honours and completed her ophthalmology training in Melbourne through the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in 2005. She has been serving the people of the Illawarra since 2006.  

A/Prof Gajus is interested in both the medical and surgical components of ophthalmology. She is experienced in the medical and surgical treatment of cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and eyelid pathology. She is up to date with current knowledge and employs the principle of best practice in her treatment of her patients. She attends numerous conferences and workshops for continuing medical education to ensure this.

A/Prof Gajus is well respected in the ophthalmic community and is involved in the teaching and training of new ophthalmologists. She has taught at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital as a Senior Registrar. She has been an examiner of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of  Ophthalmologists since 2010. She is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer of the University of Wollongong, and a Clinical Educator of the La Trobe school of Orthoptics.  She has also spoken at educational events to teach optometrists and general practitioners.

A/Prof Gajus enjoys talking with her patients and aims to always treat her patients well. Her philosophy is based on her belief that she should be putting others' interests before her own. Besides English, Dr Gajus is fluent in Indonesian. In her spare time she is involved with the local church and loves learning new things, spending time with her family and dog, and enjoys art and music.
