The Ramsay Way - Autumn 2015

MOVEMENTS&APPOINTMENTS The Ramsay Way - 2015 | 01 11 Peel nurse meets PM PEEL HEALTH CAMPUS’ ONSITE MCGRATH BREAST CARE NURSE DONNA COOK RECENTLY MET THE PRIME MINISTER, MR TONY ABBOTT AT THE PINK TEST AND JANE MCGRATH DAY IN SYDNEY. The day was about inspiring, educating and raising funds for the McGrath Foundation. Donna, along with a patient she supported for several years was selected to attend this special occasion and the team at Peel couldn’t be prouder of Donna. “We are extremely proud of Donna and what she has achieved,” said CEO Margaret Sturdy. “Donna joined us last year to provide Peel Health Campus with a dedicated breast care nurse. She provides physical, psychological and emotional support from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment. “It’s wonderful to have her as part of the team at Peel. Her passion and dedication to the McGrath Foundation along with the work she is doing here in the Peel community is outstanding.” Donna said being part of the McGrath day in Sydney was an amazing opportunity to give something back to the McGrath Foundation after working for them for seven years. The strong team culture at Peel has helped Donna to settle in at the hospital and get her McGrath breast care service operating effectively. “I’m extremely happy to be working at Peel. It’s a truly unique environment which I haven’t experienced before. Everyone has been so kind and accommodating to me to get my service up and running,” Donna said. “It’s such a “can do” attitude wherever I go, nothing is too much trouble.” Donna’s story was also covered by channel 9 Perth. Nowra’s own celebrity Kerrie Madin (Nurse Unit Manager Rehabilitation) from Nowra Private Hospital was selected to present her paper on Reconditioning - an early intervention at the 24th Annual Conference of the ARNA (Australasian Rehabilitation Nurses Association) in Darwin. Kerrie’s role incorporates clinical leader, case conference manager to all four rehabilitation consultants and assisting the GP Liaison Officer in promoting Nowra’s rehabilitation facility to the GPs from a wide geographical area. She was instrumental in recognising the increase in admissions with trauma fractures who subsequently would endure complicated comorbidities postoperatively. These patients experienced a decline in functional ability and would suffer depression due to their long term hospitalisation. Looking at the many contributing factors to patient falls outside the hospital , such as the environmental factors and the patients physical ability and functionality; Kerrie, together with the multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team developed an “early intervention” program. The program was developed 2 years ago with the goal of preventing the risk of falls for patients in the community, focussing on increasing muscle strength, improving balance, increasing cardiovascular output, and increasing confidence. An education strategy was also introduced for GPs, Practice Nurses, Home Care providers and Aged Care Facilities, providing them with information and tools to assist with early identification of patients at risk. The referral process was also simplified. Reconditioning is now occurring as an early intervention at Nowra Private and has proven to be a good measure in preventing trauma fractures and long term hospitalisation; it has also proven to be a good business model. Nowra Private is proud of Kerrie’s achievements and her ongoing contribution to our Rehabilitation services. BRONTE KUMM has been appointed as the CEO of Ramsay Sime Darby.
