The team of five doctors (Dr George Hardas, Dr Imad Mahmoud, A/Prof Harry Merkur, Dr Yogesh Nikam & Dr Alan Tong) will be offering a full range of gynaecological services as well as robotic surgery for the a range of women’s health procedures including hysterectomy; myomectomy; ovarian cystectomy, oophorectomy; excision of endometriosis and pelvic floor repair. HOLLYWOOD PRIVATE HOSPITAL IS THE FIRST HOSPITAL IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA TO INVEST IN THE NEWEST ADDITION TO THE DA VINCI LINE OF ROBOTIC SURGICAL SYSTEMS. The hospital recently purchased the da Vinci Xi Surgical System, the most advanced surgical robot in Australia. With broader capabilities than prior generations of the da Vinci system, it represents the next frontier in robotic surgery. The da Vinci Xi can be used across a wide spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimised for complex, multi-quadrant surgeries. Hollywood Private Hospital CEO, Peter Mott said the multi-million dollar investment in the robotic surgical system represents a continuation of the hospital’s focus on securing state-of-the-art medical technology and equipment. “This will be the most advanced da Vinci Surgical System of its kind available in Western Australia. Our decision to make a significant investment in the latest robotic technology is consistent with our commitment to providing the highest level of patient care” he said. ”Our surgeons will utilise the da Vinci Xi to enhance clinical outcomes for our patients across multiple specialty areas including urology, ear nose and throat surgery, gynaecology and general surgery.” The purchase of the da Vinci Xi complements a $74.1 million infrastructure project at the hospital incorporating 6 additional operating theatres, 2 new wards, 30 new mental health beds, more parking bays and a new kitchen. “We are dedicated to the ongoing expansion of our facilities and services at Hollywood Private Hospital. The introduction of technology like the da Vinci Xi is one of many technological innovations planned over the next few years” said Peter. First for Westmead DR GARY MCKAY, COLORECTAL SURGEON AT WESTMEAD PRIVATE RECENTLY UNDERTOOK AUSTRALIA’S FIRST TOTALLY ROBOTIC TRANSANAL ENDOSCOPIC MUCOSAL RESECTION (EMR) OF A SESSILE POLYP. The resection was undertaken on an 81 year old woman who had a polyp which was carpeting almost the entire anus and rectum. These sessile polyps are often benign but with time will turn into cancer and have to be removed. Traditionally when tumours are so close to the lower anal canal, surgery involves removal of the anus and rectum and creation of a permanent colostomy. In this procedure clever miniature robotic hands less than 8mm in width enter the rectum, allowing complex surgery to occur within this confined space. Dr Gary McKay said “This operation was much easier than with the traditional methods of surgery because of the control of the robotic hands from a remote console which are incredibly intuitive”. Dr McKay hopes robotic EMR will become widely adopted, leading to safer removal of large complex tumours and polyps of the anus and rectum without needing to resort to conventional morbid surgery where loss of anus and a permanent stoma are the outcome.
