Check out their stories on: www.facebook.com/RamsayHealth IT WAS A WING, A PRAYER & A PAIR OF STEADY SURGEON’S HANDS THAT SAVED WESTMEAD PRIVATE’S PATIENT SARAH BLOMFIELD THIS MONTH - WITH HER DRAMATIC RESCUE & OPERATION TO BE BEAMED TO MILLIONS AS PART OF THE HIT BRITISH TV REALITY SHOW HELICOPTER HEROES. The Barraba teenager was on a school excursion to the Jenolan Caves, when she experienced a sudden, severe headache and vomiting - with the nearest major hospital miles away. Thanks to the actions of her teachers, Sarah was quickly transferred by ambulance to Oberon and then onto Bathurst Base Hospital where a CT scan revealed a bleed on the brain. It was then that British medic Dr Ben Lakin, in Australia filming the Down Under series of Helicopter Heroes, sprinted into action - overseeing the medical care of the 14-year-old during the emergency NETS flight to Sydney. The teenager was transferred to Westmead Private where the hospital’s neurosurgeon Mark Dexter removed the life-threatening AVM (anterior venous malformation) - a tangle of abnormal blood cells which can cause severe damage with a bleed out. For Sarah’s mum Penny, the quick actions of all the staff and doctors involved will be something she will be forever grateful for. “One minute you think you have it all, your child is perfectly healthy and then you get a phone call from a teacher telling you your child is probably very ill and the closest hospital is miles away. The NETs team, Dr Lakin and Dr Dexter’s surgery are why our little girl is here today and we will be forever grateful.” Sarah spent a week in Westmead Private Hospital before being discharged home. Tim Daniel, CEO of Westmead Private Hospital said, “It was an absolute privilege for us to play our part in this truly remarkable surgery and is just another great example of the outstanding medical intervention which is being performed at Westmead Private”. Cardiac Innovation – another 1st in Qld Dr Geoff Trim, John Flynn Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist, was recently one of the first doctors in Queensland to implant the world’s smallest cardiac monitor capable of wirelessly diagnosing and Dr Trim, the small device & his first patient managing potentially dangerous irregular heartbeats. John Flynn Private Hospital used the miniature Medtronic Reveal LINQ ICM (a third of the size of a AAA battery), in their efforts to help prevent the high number of arrhythmia-related events, including cases of death in Australia, through detection and appropriate treatment of heart rhythm disorders.
