HOSPITALS Nine News Features Brisbane Nurture Centre The Brisbane Nurture Centre at North West Private Hospital was in the spotlight in May when Nine News ran a story on the important work being done to support parents adjusting to life with a new baby. 14 The Ramsay Way 2016 | 02 Record Number of Deliveries at Westmead Private A record-breaking number of babies were born at the Westmead Private on 3rd May with the birth of 16 babies born (including one set of twins). New Cardiac Procedure at John Flynn Private Cardiac surgery took another leap forward at John Flynn Private recently with the minimally invasive Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure performed for the first time on the Gold Coast. Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation or TAVI, can be a lifesaving procedure for severe symptomatic aortic stenosis, a narrowing of the aortic valve that can cause serious symptoms and significantly reduce life expectancy. In the past, the only option was for the narrowed valve to be replaced during open heart surgery, and with many patients over the age of 80, this becomes extremely high risk and unsuitable. TAVI is less invasive than open heart surgery and therefore leads to a much shorter stay in hospital and a shorter recuperation period. John Flynn Private Interventional Cardiologists Dr Guy Wright-Smith and Dr Shailesh Khatri and Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr Ben Anderson undertake TAVI procedure for first time on Gold Coast. A Breath of Fresh Air for Rehabilitation Patients at John Flynn John Flynn Private Hospital has introduced their latest outdoor facility, the Rehabilitation Mobility Garden, which is designed to assist rehabilitation patients with their recovery. Located adjacent to the Fountain Garden, this wonderful new space provides assistance to many different conditions requiring rehabilitation such as post-surgical cardiac and orthopaedic, neurological, falls prevention and amputee patients. Activity areas to assist with practical reconditioning include ramps; steps; a clothes line; a variety of ground covers including a “rocky road”; a lush lawn; and a herb garden where patients can water, toil and enjoy the aromas. The story featured specialist nurse Lorraine Evans from the Centre on the techniques used to help tired parents settle fussy sleepers. A number of mums were interviewed who, along with their infants, were staying at the centre as part of the residential program. The story focussed on Responsive Settling – the technique used by the Centre to help parents respond to their baby’s cries at sleep time with steps to help calm them and, ultimately, teach them to self-settle. Along with the establishment of a familiar bedtime routine, bedtime baby massage, darkened sleep environments and calming stories and songs before bed were all part of a raft of strategies featured. The Brisbane Nurture Centre opened its doors at North West Private Hospital three years ago and since then the Hospital estimates that more than 2,000 parents have attended the program which is the only one of its kind in a private hospital in Queensland. We all know that parenting is one of the toughest jobs in the world – congratulations to the Brisbane Nurture Centre and North West Private Hospital for making it just that bit easier for the families in their care.
