IT JUST SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY THAT I STARTED MY FIRST HOSPITAL IN SYDNEY – A MENTAL HEALTH FACILITY – JUST 16 BEDS. It was here that I met Dr John Ellard, a wonderful and eminent psychiatrist, who admitted the first patient to a Ramsay facility. This was the beginning of a long journey and I was destined to have a close relationship with Dr Ellard until his recent death. Together we established Evesham Clinic, when the original hospital at Warrina House became too small, and expanded again in 1973 to the current Northside Clinic premises in Sydney. Through the 1970s we grew, first in New South Wales, then into Adelaide and Brisbane and, we even ventured into the USA. Through these times, there were people beside me who are still with Ramsay Health Care today – my right and left hands - Ramsay Deputy Chairman Michael Siddle and Director, Peter Evans – both have been with me almost from the beginning and helped us through the tough times. There are so many events that helped shaped our Company – the privatisation of the veteran hospitals – Hollywood and Greenslopes in the mid ‘90s; the acquisition of Affinity Healthcare in 2005 and our first major venture overseas with the acquisition of Capio UK’s hospitals in England in 2007. But more importantly, it has been the wonderful staff and doctors who have worked for us – some for most of their working lives – who have helped to shape our Company into what it is today – a global organisation with 151 hospitals. Size has never mattered to me. Much more important is that we look after our patients and look after our staff and doctors. Receiving letters from patients thankful for the care they received in our facilities or hearing staff saying that they love working for Ramsay, is what brings me the most joy and satisfaction. The Ramsay Way recognises that we are nothing without our people. Thank you. Thank you to all our staff, doctors and to the Ramsay Board, for your contribution to Ramsay Health Care. I am confident that the next 50 years will be as good a journey as the first 50 years and that Ramsay Health Message from Paul Ramsay AO Care will continue to grow without losing sight of the culture and people that have made our Company what it is today. God bless you and Happy, Happy, Happy 50th! facebook.com/ramsayhealth twitter.com/ramsayhealth In 1964, Paul Ramsay, founder and Chairman of Ramsay Health Care, purchased a guesthouse called Warrina House on Sydney’s North Shore and converted it into a psychiatric hospital in the earliest days of the private hospital industry in Australia. Today, Ramsay Health Care is one of the world’s largest private hospital operators with 151 hospitals located across five countries – Australia, England, France, Indonesia and Malaysia – employing more than 30,000 people and admitting over 1.4 million patients each year. From humble beginnings in Sydney, Australia to the global success story it is today, Ramsay Health Care has remained focused on operating its business according to The Ramsay Way philosophy: “People Caring for People”. In 2014, Ramsay Health Care celebrates 50 years of People Caring for People. SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY EDITION RAMSAY HEALTH CARE WILL CONTINUE TO GROW WITHOUT LOSING SIGHT OF THE CULTURE & PEOPLE THAT HAVE MADE OUR COMPANY WHAT IT IS TODAY.
