Lake Macquarie Private Hospital celebrates 50 years of helping Hunter residents

July 27, 2023

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital is this month celebrating 50 years of providing leading private health care services to the Hunter Region.

After opening in 1973 with just 36 beds, the hospital is now a 187-bed acute medical and advanced surgical hospital, with seven operating theatres, two cardiac catheterisation labs and a vascular lab.

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital CEO, Sharon Rewitt, said the hospital continues to grow in response to community demand for its services.

“We’re currently undergoing a multi-million dollar redevelopment to further expand Lake Macquarie Private Hospital so we can care for even more of our local community members,” Ms Rewitt said.

“When completed the hospital will feature 248 private inpatient beds, 14 operating theatres, three cardiac catheterisation labs plus hybrid and vascular labs, critical care, intensive care, an enhanced 24 hr emergency department, as well as on site radiology and oncology services.

“The best feature of Lake Macquarie Private however, in my opinion, is the wonderful team of experienced and caring people we have working here.”

Lake Macquarie Private Hospital has been leading the way in regional health care for decades. In 1986 the hospital opened a brand-new angiography suite, the first private cardiac angiography unit between Sydney and Brisbane. In 2015 Lake Macquarie Private Hospital opened the region’s first private emergency department.

Ms Rewitt said the hospital’s operator, Ramsay Health Care, which purchased the hospital in 2002, was committed to the communities of the Hunter Region and providing local residents leading private health care services.

“Wherever possible, we want Hunter residents to be able to avoid travelling to Brisbane, Sydney or Canberra to access the private health care services they require,” she said.

“We’re committed to offering vital services close to home supported by experienced, passionate staff and a purpose-build facility incorporating advanced technology including our Da Vinci robot.”

The hospital’s Director of Finance, Lee Sexton, has been working for Lake Macquarie Private for more than 33 years.

“It’s quite incredible to reflect on what the hospital was when I began, to where it is now, and what is on the horizon for this great facility,” Ms Sexton said.

“By far and without a doubt the best thing about working at Lake Macquarie Private is the people. I’ve made so many lifelong friends, had some amazing mentors along the way and been fortunate to have worked with so many amazing and diverse individuals.”
