Westmead Private Hospital unveils its latest robotic technology

November 07, 2023

Sydney’s Westmead Private Hospital has unveiled new Orthopaedic robotic technology, adding a new Mako robot to its suite of robotic devices.

The Mako system is an advanced, surgeon-controlled, robotic arm designed to increase the accuracy of partial and total knee and hip replacements.

Westmead Private Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr Bijoy Thomas, said he was very pleased to offer this new technology to patients.

“The MAKO Robot can enhance my ability to provide the best care possible as the patient undergoes their knee replacement journey,” Dr Thomas said.

The Mako system uses advanced imaging and mapping technology to create a 3D model of the patient's knee. This allows for highly accurate personalised preoperative planning and intraoperative guidance.

The robotic arm helps to precisely cut and thereby place the components, leading to better alignment, fit and placement of the implants.

Additionally, the robot has features that are designed to cause less trauma to the surrounding soft tissues compared to traditional surgical techniques. Minimizing soft tissue damage can result in faster recovery times, less pain, and improved postoperative mobility.

Westmead Private Hospital CEO, Mike Flatley, said we’re proud to continue investing in leading surgical technology that’s designed to improve patient experience and outcomes.

Westmead Private Hospital has been a leader in robotic surgery since 2013.
