COMMUNITY NEWS Silver Memories: Silver Memories is a channel accessed via televisions in patients’ rooms throughout the hospital. The program, which is based on Reminiscence Therapy principles, broadcasts music with accompanying photo and comedy content from the 1920s-60s. The service is designed to reduce isolation, increase social engagement, stimulate memories and encourage movement to music. 92 year old Jim Kenyon, who was diagnosed with dementia in November 2015, responded incredibly well to the program at Greenslopes Private Hospital. His daughter Bev Kenyon said when her father saw a familiar photo or heard an old song, it brought back precious memories. His face lit up and he laughed as he recognised each picture on the screen. “He recognised most of the singers such as Doris Day and Judy Garland – they were all favourites from during the war years and after,” said Ms Kenyon. Silver Memories General Manager Gary Thorpe said: “Jim’s reaction is what we started the program for – to have a positive impact on someone’s life. To see the change in him from sitting passively to becoming animated really warms our hearts.” Business consultant Dr Liz Paslawsky has been appointed by the Vincent Fairfax Family Foundation to develop a commercial model to expand the program to other health facilities across Australia. “I’m endeavouring to ensure a triple win-win situation occurring - to benefit residents, support staff and ensure the program is financially viable for the health operator.” “Silver Memories is the first sensory innovation I have seen in dementia care that truly enables staff to ‘step in the shoes’ of residents with dementia and I congratulate Ramsay Health Care for their commitment to continuous improvement,” said Dr Paslawsky. 12 The Ramsay Way 2017 | 01 Launching Ramsay’s largest billing hub Ramsay Health Care in Western Australia (WA) recently celebrated the launch of its new centralised billing function, the WA Billing Hub. The team which comprises employees from each of the State’s five hospitals will provide a unified service for Attadale Rehabilitation Hospital, Glengarry Private Hospital, Hollywood Private Hospital, Joondalup Health Campus and Peel Health Campus. Operations Executive Manager WA and SA, Kevin Cass-Ryall said “Adopting a consistent process across multiple health funds and hospitals allows us to optimise our billing.” “Establishing the Hub has involved a lot of change over the past 12 months and it’s been fantastic to see the ‘can do’ attitude of the new regional team. I would like to thank David Simmelmann for coordinating the implementation of the Hub. My thanks also go to the Finance Managers of the five hospitals for their support with this very important regional initiative.” Therese Moller who has worked at Joondalup for the past 18 years as Accounts Receivable Supervisor has been appointed as the WA Billing Hub Manager and Hanna Fettes, previously Acting Billing Supervisor at Hollywood has been appointed Supervisor. Electronic Discharge – Why I love it! Nowra Hospital is one of the latest Ramsay facilities to introduce EDS (electronic discharge summaries). Nurse Yasmin Smith answers the most asked questions on EDS. How does it work? “The EDS (electronic discharge summary) is a securely shareable system that sends critical patient information along with patient drug instructions, directly to a GP at time of discharge. Ultimately, this improves the continuity of care for our patients.” What is the hardest thing to master? “I didn’t think there was anything too tricky – young nurses especially who are savvy on social media take to this kind of thing like ducks to water.” How does it help patients? When we used to fax the old discharge summaries, by time we faxed to the GP and the GP then scanned in the document to their patient records it wasn’t easy to read. EDS means the patient has a legible copy of their discharge summary in their hand and their doctor has one – reducing the chance of adverse events and readmissions for patients.” What does it mean for doctors and nurses? Under the EDS model, important information like allergies and co-morbidities have to be included or the user can’t progress further. This gives treating doctors and nurses a more comprehensive picture of the patient’s health status. It is also a great way to improve the circle of care with GPs.” Giving dementia patients a voice when words fail them Greenslopes Private Hospital is the first Australian hospital to offer a 24/7 nostalgia radio satellite service to its patients, as a way of improving the quality of life for elderly people while supporting carers and staff.
