The Ramsay Way 2017 | 01 3 Ramsay launches new Foundation Ramsay Health Care has announced the launch of a new research foundation – the Ramsay Hospital Research Foundation – which will undertake research activities and improving patient outcomes in Ramsay Health Care facilities. The Foundation will receive funds from the Paul Ramsay Foundation which was established with a bequest from Ramsay founder Paul Ramsay, who died in 2014. Ramsay Australia CEO Danny Sims is the Chair of the newly established RHRF Board which also includes Ramsay Australia Chief Operating Officer Kate Munnings, Strategic Medical Advisor John Horvath, Professor Kathy North, Group Chief of Staff Carmel Monaghan and, Company Secretary, Corporate Counsel Katrina Cunningham. The RHRF has recently appointed a CEO to run the operations of the Foundation. Nicola Ware has most recently been COO at Neuroscience Australia and was previously the General Manager of the Melanoma Institute for seven years. “We are very fortunate to have someone of Nicola’s calibre to lead our Foundation given her strategic, operational and finance background as well as her understanding of the complex governance environment surrounding research,” said Danny. Nicola will report to the RHRF Board. The Board looks forward to sharing more details about the Foundation and its vision and strategic plan in the next few months. New Ramsay Rule casts wider safety net for patients Ramsay Health Care has announced the introduction of The Ramsay Rule in to all Australian hospitals from March 2017. The new patient-centric strategy is based on Ryan’s Rule which was developed by Queensland Health, after three-year-old Ryan Saunders died tragically in a public hospital – and his death was subsequently found by the Coroner to be preventable. The Ramsay Rule is a three-step process where the patient, their family or carer can escalate their concerns and call for rapid assistance when they believe that something is ‘not right’ with the clinical condition of a patient. Initially concerns are raised with the nursing staff and then the nurse in charge. If the patient or family is still concerned about the patient’s clinical condition the final step is to ring a dedicated hospital phone number which alerts a senior clinical staff member. This call initiates a clinical review of the patient. National Clinical Governance Manager Glenna Parker said the aim of The Ramsay Rule was to provide the patient with a timely clinical review by an experienced clinician. “We want to ensure we acknowledge any patient or family concerns and take appropriate action immediately,” said Glenna. “The Ramsay Rule is about keeping our patients safe.” Professor North joins Ramsay’s new research board Professor Kathryn North AM has joined the Board of the Ramsay Hospital Research Foundation. Professor Kathryn North AM is Director of the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the David Danks Professor of Child Health Research at the University of Melbourne. She is trained as a physician, neurologist and clinical geneticist completing a postdoctoral fellowship in the Harvard Genetics Program. Professor North has received a number of awards including the GSK Australia Award for Research Excellence (2011), the Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research (2012) and Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to medicine in the field of neuromuscular and neurogenetics research (2012). In 2012, she was appointed Chair of the National Health and Medical Research Council Research Committee and in 2014 was appointed as a Foundation fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Science. She chairs the International Advisory Board of the Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (UK) and is a member of the Board of the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre. In addition to Ryan’s Rule, The Ramsay Rule adopts elements of the REACH program – a similar concept developed by the Clinical Excellence Commission which allows patients to firstly raise concerns with a nurse; call for a clinical evaluation and then escalate to an emergency number.
