Work continues on other modifications at Cairns Private Hospital, with its maternity wing about to undergo a multimillion dollar renovation improving the design and décor of the suites and increasing the bed and birth suite capacity. The rest of the hospital will see a conversion of much of the remaining shared accommodation to private rooms. Subsequently, work will commence on the rehabilitation ward where a purpose-built gymnasium is planned as well as a new dedicated cardiac ward. Ramsay Health Care Managing Director Chris Rex said the new and expanded facilities were attracting new specialists to the region, ensuring top quality healthcare services were available and private patients did not have to leave the area for their hospital care. “We are very positive about our ongoing investment in increased bed and theatre capacity at Cairns Private Hospital. We are ensuring the necessary infrastructure is right here in Cairns to better service the growing healthcare needs of the whole region,” Chris said. “Investing in our facilities in Cairns not only injects funds into the local economy, it ensures better facilities for the Cairns community and creates jobs for the region. It also plays an important role in attracting new specialists and other specialist clinical staff to the region.” Hospital CEO Shane Mitchell confirmed that several new specialists and clinical staff across a range of medical and surgical areas had commenced at the hospital in recent times. “The new facilities we are creating – extra theatres; beds and the new rehabilitation unit – are helping to attract new specialists and this is a real positive for the region,” Shane said. “We are also very pleased to be able to expand our workforce with over 75 new staff required for the hospital over the whole development. This is a very positive injection back into the Cairns economy.” DEVELOPMENTS Port Macquarie development awarded Port Macquarie Private Hospital's rehabilitation project and high quality of finish impressed judges in the Master Builders Association Excellence in Construction Awards in October.
