DEVELOPMENTS Kareena opens new development The Ramsay Way - 2015 | 02 3 RAMSAY HEALTH CARE MANAGING DIRECTOR CHRIS REX RECENTLY OPENED THE NEW $23 MILLION REDEVELOPMENT OF KAREENA PRIVATE HOSPITAL. THE REDEVELOPMENT INCLUDES A 36-BED SURGICAL WARD, TWO NEW THEATRES, AN INTENSIVE CARE UNIT, A SECOND GYMNASIUM AND A REFURBISHED MATERNITY WARD. Chris and theatre nurse Loretta Neil, who is Kareena’s longest serving employee, unveiled a commemorative plaque at the hospital at the official opening. Loretta started work at the hospital in 1977. General Surgeon Tony Ehtell who started at Kareena also in 1977 spoke at the ceremony. ‘‘We had two theatres and one of them was basically a broom cupboard,’’ Dr Ethell said. ‘‘You couldn’t swing a cat in it, maybe a mouse, and that was the one I got to operate in because I was junior.’’ Hospital CEO Steve Rajcany said: ‘‘Whilst we managed through the challenges of reduced parking, noisy construction and dreaded power outages, the transformation throughout this facility has been absolutely amazing.’’ Mr Rex said there would be more investment at the hospital over coming years. Photograph Sam Venn Ramsay’s Newest Emergency Department RAMSAY’S NEWEST EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT & NSW’S FIRST REGIONAL PRIVATE ED WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED AT LAKE MACQUARIE PRIVATE HOSPITAL IN MAY BY THE MAYOR OF LAKE MACQUARIE, JODIE HARRISON. The Emergency Department opened to the public on 30 March and has been outperforming expectations in its first 6 weeks. By end of May it had had over 800 presentations and more than 300 inpatient admissions. Also on hand for the opening was Peter Evans, Ramsay Deputy Chairman, who was pleased to see the results of board planning and investment into the hospital first hand. The department is the first NSW private emergency outside of Sydney and an example of the confidence the Ramsay Board has in the hospital. Lake Macquarie Private CEO Ian Maytom said while private emergency departments were common in some metropolitan areas of Australia, they were very rare in regional areas. “This is a first for Newcastle and regional NSW, and, with the back-up of Lake Macquarie Private’s extensive cardiac, intensive care and surgical services, we are well positioned to be able to provide a comprehensive emergency service for the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” Mr Maytom said. The new ED has 6 beds, including a fully resourced critical care resuscitation bay. The 24/7 service provides the people of Newcastle and the Hunter region with another option in emergency care.
