In searching for a name for the “Sim Mom”, CEO Dr Margaret Sturdy sought advice from the ‘Friends of the Hospital’ (volunteers) and from the local Aboriginal community. “We thought it would be a wonderful opportunity to involve the community by inviting them to name the mannequin, seeking a significant name to represent both motherhood and community,” Margaret said. The equipment worth more than $50,000 was donated by the Friends of the Hospital. The simulator can give birth to a single baby in different positions, and simulate obstetric emergencies including postpartum haemorrhage. Peel Health Campus is located on the traditional land of the Noongar people and on approaching community elder, Aunty Ivy, she told an enchanting story about a young girl known as Pundeena who had to cross boundaries into the land of another tribe in search of fire to create warmth for her sick father. Although Pundeena is eventually killed by the other tribe, with her last bit of strength she manages to pass the fire onto her sick father and create warmth for all the community. “It’s an honour to be invited to name the mannequin and to be able to share a traditional story of the Noongar people at the same time. “Pundeena ‘mothered’ her father and her community by risking her life to help them. This is a strong name for a simulator that could help the care of new mothers and babies” said Aunty Ivy. The hospital has also named the baby mannequin Bibbi-maawit which is baby in Noongar or Koolangka meaning child or children. The story can be related to today’s modern healthcare workers who often selflessly dedicate themselves to helping and healing others and improving community. The hospital is looking forward to using Pundeena and Bibbi-maawit as part of its ongoing learning and development program enabling the emergency, midwife, obstetrics and surgery staff to prepare for different situations. Peel draws on Aboriginal heritage to name new simulation mannequin In support of colleagues & friends who are journeying through various cancer treatments, nine members of Port Macquarie Private Hospital’s staff committed to shaving their heads in March. The story started when four operating theatre staff members were diagnosed with either breast, bowel or skin cancer. A discussion began amongst some of the theatre staff as to how many present and past staff had battled cancer or passed away from it. In an act of community spirit, five staff put their hands up to shave their heads in the World’s Greatest Shave by the Leukaemia Foundation, which will took place on Tuesday, March 3. From there other staff - including hospital CEO Paul Geddes - also volunteered to shave their heads. “The community spirit is very alive and the whole hospital has got involved with barbecue days, bake sales, raffles and generous donations from staff, doctors and external health service companies,” a spokesperson for the hospital said.
