CEO’s message THE OPENING OF PINDARA PRIVATE HOSPITAL’S NEW MAJOR $50 MILLION DEVELOPMENT ON THE GOLD COAST, FEATURES IN THIS EDITION OF THE RAMSAY WAY. I AM DELIGHTED WITH THIS DEVELOPMENT AND LOOK FORWARD TO FURTHER EXPANSION AT THIS HOSPITAL IN LINE WITH THE MASTER PLAN FOR THIS FACILITY. Later in the year, we will also open a $60 million development at Warringal Private Hospital in Melbourne and will shortly commence or complete construction on several other new developments including St George, Lake Macquarie, Caboolture, Mitcham, Port Macquarie, Dudley, Peninsula and Beleura Private Hospitals. Last financial year (2014) the Ramsay Board committed $172 million for capacity expansions in Australia and we expect to commit a further $200 million this financial year. Almost all of our 69 facilities have received an upgrade or expansion over the last five years, an indicator that we have a quality group of hospitals that are ready to meet the demand being driven by an expanding and ageing population in Australia. At the same time as managing this large number of expansions we have also expanded overseas and have recently been given the tick of approval by the regulatory authorities to acquire Générale de Santé, the market leader of private hospitals in France. With the completion of this acquisition Ramsay becomes the leading private hospital operator in a country that has a strong well-respected health system, an ageing demographic and a growing demand for health care services. We are looking forward to this business and its team becoming an integral part of Ramsay’s future operations. Ramsay Health Care is now a truly global operator with a geographically diverse portfolio of hospitals across five countries and this acquisition now cements our position in the top five private hospital operators in the world. While we continue to expand and develop I am more proud that we have not lost sight of what has made us. The Ramsay Way is integral to our success. In particular, we maintain focus on safety and risk management for both our staff and patients. Quality and risk programs introduced right across Ramsay Health Care hospitals continue to have a positive impact on incident rates, severity of incidents and incidents directly related to our own systems and processes. Risk management is high on the Board’s agenda and, as a result, incident rates remain extremely low right across the Company. In addition, I am extremely pleased to see that we continued to achieve record-breaking lows in long term injury frequency rates (LTIFRs) in 2014. Staff safety is extremely important and ensuring that our employees can work in a safe environment has been a major focus for the Company and shows in these extremely low LTIFRs recorded in 2014 and as reported in this issue of The Ramsay Way. These excellent results only come because everyone contributes in some way and I thank all our staff and doctors for your continued contribution and focus on quality and safety. Danny Buderus launches new private emergency service LAKE MACQUARIE PRIVATE HOSPITAL RECENTLY UNVEILED PLANS TO LAUNCH THE HUNTER REGION’S FIRST PRIVATE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT, PROVIDING THE COMMUNITY WITH 24/7 ACCESS TO PRIVATE EMERGENCY CARE. Opening in March 2015, the new private emergency department will employ experienced emergency trained doctors and qualified emergency nursing staff for patients with conditions requiring urgent assessment and treatment. The new emergency department will also provide a specialised sports medicine service on weekends for emergencies stemming from local sporting events. This initiative has been welcomed by Lake Macquarie Private’s ambassador and former Newcastle Knights’ great Danny Buderus, who launched the new private emergency service today. Hospital CEO Ian Maytom said the announcement was an exciting development for the Hospital and the region. “While private emergency departments are common in some metropolitan areas in Australia, they are very rare in regional areas. This is a first for Newcastle and, with the back-up of Lake Macquarie Private’s extensive cardiac, intensive care and surgical services, we are well positioned to be able to provide a comprehensive emergency service for the community 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” Mr Maytom said. Whilst aimed at providing direct access for patients with health insurance cover, the new unit will also be accessible to other members of the community. The unit will operate on a fee-for-service basis similar to other private emergency departments throughout the country. Patients will be able to self-present or be referred to the centre by their GP or medical specialist. The hospital also proposes to link in with the local ambulance service. “This service will not replace the care provided by GPs but rather will complement the services already available in Newcastle. “Our aim will be to link in with GPs, ambulance services and public hospital emergency services to ensure we are providing a complementary and comprehensive service to the local community. “Preliminary discussions with the Hunter New England Health have been very supportive of the new service and the service is being developed in consultation with local representatives of the NSW Ambulance Service to refine the protocols leading into March.” On-site radiology, pathology and diagnostic cardiology services will support the new Emergency Centre. In addition, the emergency department will provide 24 hour support for patients of the Hunter Cancer Centre, which already features a comprehensive range of medical, radiation and surgical oncology. Ramsay’s new Wollongong Private takes shape The $90M Wollongong Private Hospital development continues to progress steadily with the earthworks program now 100% complete and commencement of the car park starting to take shape. With the earthworks completed, construction of the three level basement car park commenced and is currently well underway. Within the next few months the hospital structure will start to rise above the ground floor, with the main lift shaft leading ahead. Internal walls and services installations will also commence in the car park, as the structure progresses to the upper floors. When it opens in 2016, Wollongong Private Hospital will feature 151 beds with state-of-the-art equipment, facilities and patient services occupying 4.5 floors of the 7 storey medical precinct. The completed development will showcase modern medical suites, diagnostic services with a full range of medical, surgical, day oncology and maternity services. Development of Wollongong Private Hospital is managed by AW Edwards. Interesting project statistics: • The complete car park excavation involved the removal of 135,000 tonnes of soil equal to the weight of 750 Boeing 747 planes or more than twice the weight of the Titanic. • The soil was removed from site using approximately 4,500 truck and trailer loads. If these trucks were all lined up nose to tail, the distance covered would be equivalent to Wollongong to Sydney. • The structure will be reinforced by approximately 220km of post tension cabling laid in a grid fashion throughout the suspended floors in addition to conventional steel reinforcement. • The main lift shaft is formed up using a jumpform system which is able to self-climb using 14 hydraulically driven jacks.
