HOSPITALNEWS St Andrew’s stents first patient ST ANDREW’S IPSWICH PRIVATE HOSPITAL PERFORMED THE REGION’S FIRST INTERVENTIONAL CARDIAC PROCEDURE IN SEPTEMBER. St Andrew’s cardiac catheter laboratory became operational in January 2014 with only diagnostic angiography being performed until this time. St Andrew’s CEO Chris Went said patients requiring interventional cardiac procedures had previously had to travel to Brisbane and so it was a significant milestone in the delivery of cardiac services for Ipswich and surrounds. “St Andrew’s is now positioned to provide diagnostic and interventional cardiac services. Cardiac blockages can now be identified and treated locally through the insertion of stents.” said Chris. A NEW 37-BED PURPOSE-BUILT CHILDREN’S WARD WILL BE BUILT ON TOP OF THE MAIN HOSPITAL BUILDING AT JOONDALUP HEALTH CAMPUS. The project will be funded by the State Government ($6m), Telethon WA ($6m) and Ramsay Health Care which has donated $1m to Telethon each year for three years. The facility will be called the Telethon Children’s Ward in recognition of the charity’s generous grant. CEO Kempton Cowan said the new facility will enable more children to be treated locally and will help to support the new Perth Children’s Hospital to meet the growing demand for paediatric services. With floor-to-ceiling glass surrounds, the ward will be bright and spacious with 360 degree views over Lake Joondalup and towards the Indian Ocean. Facilities will include: overnight facilities for parents and activity areas for children. “Joondalup Health Campus has an excellent team of paediatric doctors and nursing staff led by Professor Desiree Silva. This team is very much looking forward to the new ward and new facilities,” Kempton said. “The existing 24-bed Children’s Ward is located in the original hospital building which was built in 1980. It has been an excellent service but it is time for a new modern facility. “Paediatric demand at JHC has increased significantly in recent years. Emergency attendances increased by 56 per cent between 2009 and 2013 while admissions increased by 31 per cent over the same period. “To expand services further, a new facility is needed and this ward will meet this demand.” 4 The Ramsay Way - 2014 | 03 “The hospital was required to demonstrate service capability before being granted authority to perform interventional procedures. We are thrilled to have been permitted to move our cardiac catheter laboratory into its next phase of service delivery.” St Andrew’s Ipswich Private Hospital has a dedicated team of 10 cardiologists that service the Ipswich and West Moreton Region. This team provides an on-call roster; ensuring that private patients have access to cardiac care at all hours. The hospital continues to grow and meet the needs of the Ipswich and West Moreton Region with further capacity and expansion predicted over the coming years.
