NextGen Plus expands IN 2014, RAMSAY WA WILL MOVE TO FORMALISE ITS HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL NEXTGEN PLUS PROGRAM BY SIGNING MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING AGREEMENTS & PARTNERING WITH A NUMBER OF PERTH METROPOLITAN SCHOOLS. Leeming Senior High School is the first school to sign such an agreement, with five other schools agreeing in a very short period of time with another 15 to 20 schools in the process of signing. The program connects the private health industry to schools to showcase the diversity in roles within the health sector, develop methods of localised recruitment and also set up community links for the hospitals with schools in their geographical zones. Students are placed at one of the five Ramsay WA hospitals one day a week, over 15 weeks in this program, which has been available to Year 11 and 12 students for over six years now. Students are supervised by qualified staff and receive real on the job experience whether it’s witnessing births, preparing patient meals, observing a surgical procedure, working with accounts payable or assisting with grounds and building maintenance. Chris Minchin, Regional Coordinator of NextGen Plus said the benefit these partnerships will bring to Perth schools is a closer working relationship with an industry leader in the health care industry. “The program will provide students with an opportunity to witness their career aspiration up close, with the added possibility of making a giant stride forward in starting their career pathway by obtaining part time employment with Ramsay Health Care. “These partnerships will open the door to future opportunities for Perth high school students in the health industry, and will help Ramsay Health Care with its long term workplace strategic plan of building a workforce for the future.” Leeming High School Student Services and VET Manager Vance Bryan with Ramsay Regional Coordinator of NextGen Plus Chris Minchin. Leeming Senior High School currently offers a wide range of Vocational Pathways for Students to pursue. However, Student Services and VET Manager, Vance Bryan acknowledges that the NextGen Plus Program offers a very different practical experience and offers participants a real snapshot into what it’s like to work within the healthcare industry. “For the Leeming community to have access to a program like NextGen Plus that can act as anything from a standardised work placement opportunity right the way through to a potential employment or career pathway, is a unique, broad ranging and practical strategy. As a school, we want to see genuine learning pathways for our students to explore. We believe this partnership with Ramsay Health Care will fulfil this need.” The Next Gen program offers two intakes per year. Applications for the 2014 intake close in February 2014.
