The 18 bed unit includes active daily living spaces and a well-equipped gymnasium. HOSPITAL NEWS A new and innovative mother baby unit, designed to assist parents who are struggling with the immense physical, emotional and social adjustment to parenting, opened at North West Private Hospital in Brisbane in June. The Brisbane Nurture Centre is the first of its type in a private hospital in Queensland Clinical Coordinator of the Unit, Lorraine Evans, said parents who experience issues with sleep, settling and feeding end up so exhausted that this impacts on their health. “What should be a joyful period in their lives with their newborn can be the complete opposite if they do not get assistance to manage these issues,” Lorraine said. “That’s where the Brisbane Nurture Centre can help. “Our qualified staff will assist parents with feeding difficulties, infant sleeping disorders, unsettled or irritable infants, reflux and colic, maternal exhaustion and adjustment to parenthood. “The safe and calm environment of the Centre provides the essential support parents need to be able to look after their baby and will arm them with the tools they need to strengthen this relationship. “For example, we will teach parents the best approaches to sleep and settling their children through establishing positive routines, observations of tired signs and setting up positive sleep associations. This approach is relevant for infants and children up to 18 months of age.” She said the Centre had been overwhelmed with enquiries in the lead up to opening. The Centre opened in mid June and was fully booked for the first three weeks. “We have been surprised by the level of interest - there is obviously great demand in the community for a centre like this,” Lorraine said. The Brisbane Nurture Centre admits mothers and their babies together into single room accommodation under a five day residential style program (Monday to Friday). The Centre works with families to ascertain what they would like to achieve during the program and then provides individual support, advice, education and group sessions. Group sessions offered during the program will include: • Sleep and settling • Nutrition and family eating • Baby massage • Circle of security/attachment parenting • Adjustment to parenting • Feeding/breastfeeding • Play and communication with babies and toddlers During the program there is the opportunity for partners to attend group sessions in the evening. For information visit the Centre website at: www.brisbanenurturecentre.com.au A brand new Cardiac Angiography Laboratory has been installed at Peninsula Private Hospital in Frankston, Victoria. Dr Palananda Arunothayaraj (Arun) performed the first procedure in May. The new Siemens Angiography Laboratory replaces the Siemens laboratory that has served the population of Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula over the last ten years. The hospital performed more than 2450 heart procedures in the laboratory during the last twelve months, and with just one lab, is one of the busiest cardiac centres in Victoria. The new angiography laboratory is well positioned close to the open heart operating theatre so that heart surgeons are on hand for consultation should that need arise. Open heart surgery began at the hospital in October 2012 and to date over 40 patients have benefited from the introduction of this new service to the Mornington Peninsula. John Flynn midwife & twin, Robyn Martin, has cared for many babies born at John Flynn over the past 20 years but none so precious as her twin grandsons Lennox and Kingston born 17th April 2013, to daughter-in-law Sarah and son Josh. Kareena’s newest video ‘Having a Baby at Kareena’ has been launched on the Kareena website and the Ramsay Youtube channel with over 1600 views within the first few weeks. The video is an overview of the maternity facilities, services, midwifery team and care that patients can expect to experience when they stay at Kareena. Kareena Private CEO Steven Schultze said: “We wanted to create a maternity tour that our patients could take from the comfort of their home. “We are extremely proud of our experienced midwifery team, the services and facilities on offer at Kareena and we wanted to showcase this to our community in a more personalised way.” The video compliments the maternity tours run weekly on-site.
