DEVELOPMENTS Brainlab – a first for Queensland, opens at Greenslopes Greenslopes Private Hospital opened its 18th main operating theatre in May this year to cater for its growth in surgical services. The additional theatre is dedicated to neurosurgery and spine surgery and has been equipped with the Brainlab's Airo Mobile Intraoperative CT which is the first of its kind in Queensland and only the fourth to be installed in Australia. The Airo is a large-bore, mobile, 32-slice CT scanner that assists surgeons with visualisation and to help verify surgical goals through real-time imaging. Airo's 107cm gantry size and flexibility allow facilities to offer high-quality imaging for a comprehensive range of clinical procedures while helping overcome conventional intraoperative limitations. Greenslopes CEO, Mr Tim Daniel said that the hospital had installed the diagnostic quality mobile imaging system for neuro and spine surgical procedures to assist surgeons in streamlining efficiency and to help expand the clinical benefit to patients. “The Airo offers mobility, flexibility and access to real-time patient images, while also allowing for flexibility in patient positioning,” Tim said. “Airo along with the Curve navigation system allow surgeons to see how their surgeries are progressing, while maintaining the patient's surgical position.” Surgeons can automatically register the newly acquired intraoperative CT images and merge pre-operative scans to track and monitor their surgical instruments in real time, increasing intraoperative confidence and helping to safely achieve desired surgical goals. 6 The Ramsay Way 2016 | 02 “We look forward to fully utilising this imaging system to help enhance the quality, safety and outcomes of the surgical care of our patients.” At the same time GPH continues to expand robotic surgery with its latest acquisition of the newest generation da Vinci Xi® Robotic Surgical System. This means that Greenslopes is one of the few private hospitals to have two robots running in adjacent dedicated robotic theatres. Greenslopes now has 20 surgeons that have trained or are undergoing their training to perform robotic surgery on the da Vinci surgical system. “With more trained robotic surgeons and a second dedicated robotic theatre we can offer access to advanced minimally invasive surgical options for patients with diseases and conditions in the areas of urology, gynaecology, colorectal, head and neck and general surgery,” Mr Daniel said. “The second robot has also meant that not only are we able to offer more surgeons access to work with the latest technology but we are also able to offer more theatre staff across different specialties the opportunity to train and work with the da Vinci robotic surgical system.” Greenslopes Private Hospital was the first hospital in Queensland to offer robotic surgery in late 2008 and since then our surgeons have performed more than 3,250 robot-assisted procedures making it one of the busiest sites in Australia. Greenslopes’ Brainlab theatre opens – a first for Queensland. A new multi-storey car park, a new café and a new Day Surgery along with the latest Da Vinci Xi Robot and 3D O-arm (which provides surgeons with 3D imaging during surgery) are all part of the hospital's $38m facelift. St George Private Hospital is currently Australia’s highest volume bariatric hospital and the nation’s first internationally recognised “Centre for Metabolic and Bariatric Excellence”, as recognised by the Surgical Review Corporation which accredits centres of excellence around the world. The renovations include 10 new beds to the bariatric unit, in line with the growing demand for bariatric surgery – which has increased 10-fold in the past two decades.
