All patients must be admitted by a hospital-accredited specialist or general practitioner.

Depending on the patient’s admission category, additional administrative or funding requirements may apply prior to admission, including insurance approvals, cost estimates or referral documentation.

Patients may be admitted under the following categories:

  • Privately insured
Covered by a private health fund. No insurer approval is required for standard admissions but checks should be made for waiting periods or exclusions.
  • Self-funded
Patients pay directly for their care. A cost estimate must be provided and accepted prior to admission.
  • Workers’ compensation
Requires pre-approval from the relevant insurer. Supporting documentation is essential before booking.
  • Overseas patients
Must have approval from their overseas insurance provider (e.g. travel or international student cover).
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)
Eligible veterans can be admitted under DVA funding arrangements in line with program provisions.

If you’re unsure about any part of the admission process or require assistance, your local Ramsay hospital’s Medical Services or Admissions team can provide further support.
