Mohs - dermatology
Mohs surgery is a highly precise technique used to treat certain types of skin cancer, especially in sensitive areas like the face, nose, ears and hands. It involves removing thin layers of cancerous tissue one at a time, examining each under a microscope, until no cancer cells remain.
At Ramsay Surgical Centre Charlestown, surgeons use this precise method to remove cancerous tissue while aiming to preserve as much healthy skin as possible.
Mohs surgery is typically performed by a specialist dermatologist with advanced training in this technique. These doctors, known as Mohs surgeons, have advanced expertise in skin cancer treatment and reconstructive surgery.
Common conditions treated with Mohs surgery include:
- basal cell carcinoma (BCC)
- squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
- recurrent or aggressive skin cancers
- skin cancers in cosmetically or functionally sensitive areas
What to expect?
Mohs surgery is typically performed in a single session, though the procedure can take several hours, depending on how many layers need to be removed. Patients are awake but comfortable under local anaesthesia. In some cases, additional reconstructive surgery may be required after the cancer is removed.
