The VELYS robot was first used at Cairns Private Hospital this month and complements the hospital’s ROSA Orthopaedic robot and da Vinci Xi surgical robot used for Urology, Gynaecology and Colorectal surgery. 

Orthopaedic Surgeon and Medical Director at Cairns Private Hospital, Dr Chris Morrey, said it was  great to see regional Australians provided with access to leading healthcare technology.

“Reducing the need to travel to a major city for robotic surgical procedures helps reduce stress for patients and allows them to recover close to home, with their support network,” Dr Morrey said.

“The financial cost for far north Queenslanders to constantly travel south for appointments, scans and surgeries also cannot be overestimated. Having this technology in Cairns is a wonderful thing for the local community.”

Robotic technology is designed to offer a minimally invasive approach to surgery.

Equipped with advanced cameras and optical trackers, the new robot assists surgeons by gathering patient anatomy data in real time. The robot is designed to aid the surgeon as they plan for and execute precise procedures tailored to a patient’s specific anatomy.
