New Ramsay Australia chief hits the ground running

October 02, 2020

Australia’s largest private hospital operator, Ramsay Health Care Australia, is pleased to announce the appointment of Carmel Monaghan as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective 1 October 2020.

Ms Monaghan has been a member of the Ramsay Health Care leadership team for more than 22 years, and has worked across hospital, corporate and global Ramsay positions, playing a key role in the company’s successful growth during this time. She has a comprehensive understanding of health care operations and strategy both in Australia and overseas.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ramsay Health Care, Craig McNally, said Ms Monaghan has the experience and respect of her peers to continue driving Ramsay’s growth agenda into the future.

“Carmel is a true professional and has shown exceptional dedication to Ramsay Health Care and the broader health care sector over the past two decades,” Mr McNally said.

“In her time with Ramsay, Carmel has displayed a strong commitment to the Ramsay Way culture, which recognises that people are our most important asset. She has had a particular emphasis on delivering results through focusing on customers and developing strong doctor relationships,” he said.

Ms Monaghan said the opportunity to lead Ramsay Health Care’s Australian operations was humbling.

“I joined Ramsay in 1998 when we had 12 hospitals. Today, our Australian operations include more than 70 hospitals, a network of almost 60 community pharmacies and an expanding hospital-in-the-home business.

"We are one of Australia’s quiet achievers – growing and developing our healthcare services, working with doctors to deliver excellent healthcare outcomes, and investing in regional and rural communities where our roots lie. With 30,000 people employed across the business, Ramsay is also one of the country’s largest private employers.”

Ms Monaghan said under her leadership, Ramsay would continue to focus on its people and developing strong relationships with doctors. Having worked closely with founder Paul Ramsay for many years, she said she had adopted his passion for people.

“Ramsay’s recipe for success has not changed in over 50 years,” she said. “It’s all about having the right people and the right strategy and sticking to it.

“But, like Paul Ramsay, we also need to be entrepreneurial and flexible as the world changes.”

“I plan to use my extensive experience and understanding of health care operations and strategy to grow our hospital business in Australia, expand our outpatient and ambulatory care services, and prioritise regional health care to ensure all Australians have access to quality health care.

“I’m also interested in building our expertise in the mental health sector, to help our hospitals become leading centres of excellence, supporting patients with care in their homes, and providing virtual health care solutions in a digital age.”

Ms Monaghan replaces Danny Sims, who is commencing a transition to retirement after 17 years with Ramsay Health Care Australia, including almost six years as CEO.
