Pindara physiotherapist all set for Olympic debut in Tokyo

July 15, 2021

When Alex Beck takes to the athletics track at the Tokyo Olympics, he may well hear the cheers of support all the way from Pindara Private Hospital on the Gold Coast.

Not only was Alex born at Pindara  29-years-ago, he’s also a member of the Allied Health team, having worked as a physiotherapist there for almost five years.

Speaking just ahead of his departure for Tokyo, where he’ll represent Australia in the 400-metre track event, Alex said he can’t wait to fulfil his dream of competing at the Olympics.

“The Olympic experience is something the whole community gets behind and it’s just really nice to know there’s a lot of people in my corner wanting to see me succeed,” he said.

“I’ve been running for more than 10 years and I was close to selection in 2012 and 2016 but this will be my Olympic debut which I’ve been wanting to achieve my whole career.  Looking back, I think missing out previously really lit that fire in me and to now be running the best I’ve ever been, it’s just awesome,” he said.

Alex said he loved being able to combine his physiotherapy career at Pindara Private Hospital with his passion for sport and elite performance. He admits many of his patients may not realise they’re being treated by an Olympian.

“When I’m at Pindara I don’t get too much into what I do, because it’s all about the patients, not me. There are a few who know about my journey and I know they’ll be cheering me on,” he said with a laugh.

Pindara Private Hospital Chief Executive Officer Mark Page has wished Alex all the best for his Olympics debut on behalf of the entire Pindara team.

“I’m sure the whole ‘Pindy’ team will be cheering Alex on when he hits the track and I encourage everyone to send their positive thoughts and support Alex’s way.  We’re so proud of Alex and can’t wait to celebrate his achievements on his return!” Mr Page said.

Alex heads to Cairns this week to join the athletics team for their pre-departure camp. They then leave for Tokyo, via Sydney on 25th July.

The men’s 400 metres event is scheduled to take place between 1 - 5 August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium.
