Ill and injured patients in developing nations and rural Australia continue to benefit from vital, donated medical supplies and equipment, despite COVID-19 related restrictions on international travel and freight.
Ramsay Health Care Australia, in a joint venture with Berrima District Rotary, are working together to donate and deliver essential supplies no longer needed at Ramsay hospitals.
Since late 2020, Ramsay Health Care has donated equipment and supplies including 70 ECG machines, 58 beds, 720 robes and hundreds of leftover clinical trial supplies including drug screening tubes, blue slides for blood smears, sterile droppers and specimen bags.
Ramsay Health Care Australia CEO, Carmel Monaghan said these supplies and equipment would help patients across the globe.
“The global pandemic has put pressure on health care systems around the world,” Ms Monaghan said.
“We know many smaller nations and rural Australian communities are suffering, so we’re proud to be able to help with vital equipment and supplies.”
“The donated equipment has come from Ramsay Health Care hospitals across Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. While no longer needed by our hospitals, this equipment still has value for many health care facilities.
“The ECG machines, for example, have been replaced with updated models at our hospitals, but they remain in working order and still have the ability to save lives.”
ECG machines are being sent to Afghanistan, the Soloman Islands, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Alice Springs and Galiwinku in the Northern Territory. Beds will be sent to The Philippines, Timor Leste, Sri Lanka and Lebanon.
Ms Monaghan said a bonus of the initiative was reducing waste.
“Ramsay Health Care has a sustainability strategy which focuses on creating stronger communities, healthier people and a thriving planet,” she said.
“I’m pleased to see these supplies and equipment helping people instead of sitting unused or ending up in landfill.”
Ramsay’s donations are distributed internationally by Medical Aid for Oceania (MAfO).
MAfO Project Manager, John Macpherson, said he appreciates Ramsay’s donations and its annual contribution of $10,000 towards freight and other costs.
“The project continues to benefit enormously from the diverse range of equipment offered by Ramsay Health Care facilities,” Mr Macpherson said.
