Dr Avi Raman is a Urological Surgeon with interests in all aspects of urology and renal transplantation. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic uro-oncology, benign urological conditions and stone disease. Originally from the UK, Dr Raman completed his medical degree in 2004 at the University of New South Wales and subsequently completed a Masters in Public Health.
Dr Raman finished his general surgical training and went on to complete advanced Urological training in New South Wales. Following this, he was admitted to the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons with full accreditation as a Urologist in 2016.
Dr Raman completed a highly acclaimed Fellowship at the Royal Free Hospital in London specialising in minimally invasive Renal Surgery. The Royal Free Hospital is one of the largest Renal Surgery units in the world, and Dr Raman worked alongside several world- renowned urologists. On completing his fellowship Dr Raman worked as a Renal Surgery Consultant at the Royal Free Hospital, before returning to Newcastle in 2017. He brings his extensive experience in endoscopic, robotic, laparoscopic and open urological and transplant surgery here to Newcastle and the Hunter area.
Dr Raman has published extensively in national and international medical and surgical journals and is on the editorial board of several international journals. In addition, he is one of only a handful of urologists involved in global teleconferencing for Medecins Sans Frontieres. He is also a conjoint lecturer at the University of Newcastle and has an active role in teaching medical students and junior doctors.
Dr Raman has consulting rooms in East Maitland, Merewether and Nelson Bay and operates in the public sector at the John Hunter, Belmont, Maitland Hospital and Cessnock Hospital as well as at a number of local private hospitals.
He is now consulting weekly in the East Maitland rooms and is readily available to see patients in a timely fashion and can usually see urgent referrals within a week. He is also available to GP’s on the phone at any time and can be contacted readily through the rooms or directly on his mobile phone.
