Dr Joseph Robin has been in orthopaedic practice for over 35 years. His main interests are in hip, knee and shoulder surgery, particularly arthroscopic surgery of the knee and shoulder, sports injuries of all types and joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee. His recent interests include alternative treatment of hip arthritis for ‘younger’ more active patients (under 70 years), particularly with hip resurfacing and the use of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) prosthesis. He was one of the first surgeons to introduce this procedure in Victoria and has been undertaking this operation now since 1999 with over 350 successfully treated cases to date.
Up-to-date results of this personal series of BHRs (verified and authenticated by the ANJRR* in 2011) show a revision rate at 9 years of only 1 case in 265 consecutive BHRs (ie, a failure rate of <0.4%, or a retention/’success’ rate of 99.6%), which has continued to the current 350 (= 99.7%). Dr Robin’s longest surviving BHR implants are now out to 13 years with no signs of a decline in function, all returned to work, and most have returned to sport.
Dr Robin obtained his FRACS in Melbourne in 1980 and his F.A. Ortho. A. in 1986. Following training in Bristol and Cambridge UK and Graz, Austria he returned to take up a consultant position at the Moorabbin Hospital and the Austin Hospital. He is currently Head of the Orthopaedic Unit II at the Austin Hospital, a position he has held since 2001. The main interests of this unit are in hip, and knee arthroplasty, joint reconstruction and sports injuries (especially those of the knee). He continues to be a member of the AOA, the AAOS, ASOS and the AMA.
