Dr Soong-Yuan Ooi is an Australian trained Gastroenterologist with an interest in Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Based at Holy Spirit Northside and North West Private Hospitals, he provides consultation services in general gastroenterology with a keen interest in IBD, together with endoscopy and colonoscopy procedures including bowel cancer screening.
He provides his services in IBD to the Metro North health services of Queensland Health, based at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, North Lakes Health Precinct, Caboolture Base Hospital and Redcliffe Hospital.
Dr Ooi completed his undergraduate medical degree at the University of Adelaide in 2003 (MBBS) before undertaking his internship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Following this, he completed basic physician training at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in 2009 before progressing to Advanced Gastroenterology training. Having gained experience in general gastroenterology, liver diseases, IBD and endoscopic procedural skills at the Gold Coast University and Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, Soong-Yuan was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2012.
During this time he also completed a Graduate Certificate in Health Sciences with a focus on Clinical Education (GCHlthSci) and went on to pursue his keen interest in IBD by completing a two-year Clinical Research Fellowship in IBD at the Royal Adelaide Hospital in 2014 where he gained experience in complex IBD (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) while also being involved in the IBD Clinical Trials program. His research focus was on non-surgical strategies to optimize care for IBD patients, and was awarded a Faculty Divisional Scholarship by the University of Adelaide.
Dr Ooi accepted a Staff Specialist position at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide for 12 months while completing his post-fellowship training, providing services in IBD and endoscopic procedures and is a current member of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Gastroenterological Society of Australia. He provides consultation services in general gastroenterology, with a particular interest in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) having undertaken additional post-fellowship training with the IBD Service, Royal Adelaide Hospital.
