Dr Sergei Tsakanov completed his medical degree at the prestigious University of Sydney in 2005 and spent the following decade in dedicated pursuit of surgical mastery. He practiced in both rural and metropolitan settings across renowned centres of excellence such as the Prince of Wales, Wollongong, St George, St Vincents, Sutherland, Bankstown and Darwin hospitals.
In 2019, following a successful completion of stringent examinations, Dr Tsakanov was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He is a Visiting Medical Officer at the Auburn hospital and a regular locum VMO at Armidale and South East Regional (Bega) hospitals.
In addition to his career as a General Surgeon, Dr Sergei Tsakanov is passionate about training medical students and junior doctors in the art and science of Surgery. He holds a Masters degree in Surgical Education from the University of Melbourne.
While working for the Western Sydney Local Health District, Dr Tsakanov has developed and implemented a novel online medical student Surgical teaching program called “Online Ward Rounds”. This program has achieved international recognition with several publications and presentations.
Dr Tsakanov is an Adjunct Lecturer at the University of Notre Dame Australia and an examiner for the Surgical part 1 Examinations. You can listen to him talking about various aspects of Surgery and Surgical Training on the “Virtual Ward Rounds” Podcast.
Dr Sergei Tsakanov firmly believes in the shared decision-making process, when the Patient together with the Surgeon makes an informed choice about the best treatment. He prides himself on being able to deliver an accurate, easy to understand and clear description of proposed treatment. Dr Tsakanov encourages his patients to seek a second opinion and is happy to provide a second opinion to other patients to ensure they achieve the best possible outcome.
